I got my cables the instructions say use plastic or metal hardware cloth what is that? Maybe not applicable for ground installation ? I would ask Tom but don't want him to have to recommend agAinst label instu tins for obvious reasons. I will try doing a site search but I Often have trouble with that function. Thanks

No worries bro, I have been using the cables for years, I lay the cables in the soil between 6-10 inches deep, and use a zig zag pattern making sure that the cable does not touch itsself, this will cause it to short out. I use bamboo sticks to keep it seperated and after I back fill the hole that I put the cables in, I remove the sticks (obviously). Make sure that the thermostat is laying as low as the rest of the cable, it will turn on and off dependant on the temp of the soil that it is at, in other words, if the cable is 8 inches down and the thermostat is 4 inches deep, obviously the soil at 4 inches will be warmer than at 8 inches. I hope that this helps.

Don't worry Jim. I am still using the same soil cable from Tom and it has gone through the ringer and still going strong.Make sure that the thermostat is laying as low as the rest of the cable and you should be good to go.
