I was thinking about how many people were bummed when Bigpumpkins.com went down. I was also thinking of the amount of activity here. That brought up the question of exactly how many people are actively posting and how many are just coming here to look around, browsers? Does anyone have these answers? Just curious.

I think there are many more lurkers ( for lack of a better word ) than active posters. I bet a lot of us would be surprised at how many people quietly view the site without anyone knowing, maybe Ken. Quite a while back, I was looking for input on something and it was amazing how many e-mails I received from people who I thought were out of the game, let alone subscribers to this site. We are being watched;)

for many of us going to bp at least once a day is a manditory read.sometimes if for no better reason then we want to see whats going on and whos doing what to who-lol. or in my case being retired and having lots of time makes it much easier to drop in and out.
i agree many known and unknown growers visit often but prefer to remain silent.i guess its all in how your personality plays into everything. just look at the people that show up for auction night. some are never heard from again other than that?
me personally i enjoy sharing info and suggestions if i think it will help. if just 10% of the new growers stick with it then the hobby has benefited greatly.
to me the greatest benefit of a site like this is explained in one word - EXPOSURE. for the individual as well as building grower interest, club promotions and general advertizing of local events as well.
good post marv

pap, I'm one of those new growers..I recently sent you some pictures and a letter to your home address. I grew your 1596 last year and had some unusual cracks occur. Very interested on your opinion and suggestions. I included my own e-mail address. Return address is Plainwell, Mi 49080.

i remember the photos and also gave them to ron for a look see. to me it just looked like the fruits surface was very dry possibly hard and as the fruit tried to continue growing it developed cracks in the surface. to much sun on the fruit during hottest weather could also cause some cracking problems. people used to also use calcium drenched towels that also possibly hardened the surface contributing to some cracking in my opinion. they usually occur though as the fruit becomes mature and the pumpkin is still growing. we never uncover our pumpkins unless its cloudy or once the sun is farther in the south in september. pap

Andy,LUB, your exactly right. Not that Im any famous grower by far or anything close, but I have had many growers come up to me at weigh offs that I didnt even know(screen name) say; ''are you Brooks B. on bigpumpkins.com??''. LOL Seriously!,,its crazy how many times that happens, and most of them say to me that they dont post much and are more of a lurker then anything. It sure is fun meeting growers that way.
WAY more Lurkers then posters for sure.
Pap, your right , espically when bp.com is the first thing you see when you sign on the net because bigpumpkins.com is your home page....and boy does that agravate my daughter when she gets on my computer!,,ha! she just rolls her eyes!lol!!

I think I am a lurker. This will be my second year growing, but I am on here every night trying to learn by reading everyone's post. Thanks, Joe Z.

Thanks for the input. We did uncover our pumpkins during the day. That might have been the problem. Will try again this year and keep them covered on the sunny days.

Not sure if lurker is the right term, but I enjoy reading what people in the know have to say. I have recieved quite a bit of info as well as benefitted from the generosity of some people on this site with seeds, pumpkin and sunflower. Seems like a great community. When I have some practical knowledge I will respond, until then, why? I did miss when Kens base was down. Thanks, Dave

There were 511 diaries last year. I'd bet the number of people not posting diaries is bigger than that. No way are there 1000 people posting regularly on these boards. Definately an abundunce of lurkers. lol.
