Who has grown it? Did it go heavy or light to the 2005 chart? What %?
I am trying to decide on where and when to weigh a pumpkin as it has a small skin crack in the blossom end and would hate for it to let go totally and miss getting weighed at all. But it is within touching distance of re claiming the NZ record. and still putting on weight.

Man! does that 1209 grow some good ones Steve!Best of luck on getting that record!
(knocking on wood for you).... I myself have only heard/or read about on the aggc of only 1 pumpkin (1079 Frantz '08' dmg) out of the approx 50 pumpkins that has ever had blossom end troubles off the 1209 and any I have heard of since and that 1079 was because the pumpkin had a con-caved blossom that also had a reverse type birdbath shape where the blossom end was down and very close to the ground.and by the looks of it on the aggc it might have been touching the ground.
All the other few DMG's was because of the very wet season we had that one year where alot of patches flooded and the pumpkin ended up rotting from the bottom. The 1475 Revier, Chad grew from the 1209 he found a pin hole at the bottom of pumpkin when lifting it , not sure about how wet his season was though. So if I was you Steve, spray the heck out of the bottom of that pumpkin with some good fungicide,,lol

Hi Steve, I too have a great pumpkin that is growing well and should soon tape over the NZ record (touch wood) I was planning on making the trip to Auckland in April for the official great pumpkin commonwealth weigh off at the Easter show. I was under the impression the pumpkin needed to be weighed at an official event to have the weight verified and the pumpkin assessed by officials to attest to its integrity as a non-damaged pumpkin. If not I will plan on growing the pumpkin as long as possible, until I notice a problem, then get it weighed somewhere local to avoid the risk of damage while transporting to an official site. Does anyone else know what the official requirements are have a record weight verified? Does it need to be at an official competition? or can it just be weighed on calibrated scales? P.S. What is your current OTT?

Hi brownie and DARKY, good to see other NZ growers out there. Always a mission to try and find out who else out there is growing. To help with the local growers I have set up a forum on the www.giantpumpkins.co.nz website, feel free to check it out and join in if you want.
First time I have heard of the Easter show being an official great pumpkin commonwealth weigh off, but with everyone being secret squirrel it wouldn't surprise me. Haven't seen anything listed on their site for a NZ association, which I assumed you had to have to take part (I could be wrong on that though)
At the moment, I think as long as it is on calibrated scales, most people seem to go with that, but having an official weigh off for the big growers would be great to see .

Wow, congrats to NZ, growers!!! Competition is a good thing, I think!!! Brownie, to have yer pkn recorded by the GPC, I think it has to be weighed at a GPC site!!! If you can't make it to a GPC site, I would recommend...at the very least...Certified scale, witnesses, and some official type person, & lots of photos!!! (Agriculture agent, or the Mayor or someone) to verify that all is good...including scales, and soundness of pumpkin!!! If not a GPC site, it is a battle!!! Peace, Wayne

get the pumpkin weighed on cattle scales or some other reputable scale and get a local justice of the peace to verify the weighing. that way no one can say its not true. even the local stock agents will weigh it and give you a print out.
BUT...... dont do what i did last year and use truck scales. the local grain silos weighed my pumpkin at 380kgs including pallet and strops and i was stoked!...... only to find out later that the scales go up in 20kg increments and go to the highest value over 1kgs!!. my true weight was 330kgs.... weighed at the Easter show. boy... some folks gave me a telling off. at least we have zest for competition here in good old NZ lol
anyway...... i only got 150kgs this year, so no challenge from me. good luck to you guys, hope someone hits the 1000lb mark, it will be good for all kiwi growers, knowing it can be done here
cheers

Yea Gads,,lol,, I ment the 1207 Young,
I must have been thinking of the 1209 Kuhn for some reason, lol,, but yea that info on the 1207 Young I had is the little of what I know about it. Not a bad seed to grow looking at the weights its produced and all going heavy to the charts.

Hi Sam re the easter show A few years ago I started the pumpkins competition at the easter show again I think 3 or 4 years ago we ran a GPC sanctioned competition at the easter show but due to lack of support I could not continue to justify the expense however I still try to fly the GPC flag if possible without claiming to be sanctioned. It would be good if we could have one sanctioned weighoff in NZ.

macivo Yes you need to get them weighed on good scales however to be recognised they need to be weighed on Certified scales and to be well documented and witnessed.
