I read your diary post about your experience with local Starbucks. I'm surprised. I'd ask the manager why they don't participate in their "Grounds for your garden program" and ask (or email corporate office) where you can find a participating store. This program has been in place for over 15 years. I thought it was available at all stores.
Excerpts below from their website: http://www.starbucks.com/responsibility/environment/recycling

If you go to places like dunkin donuts and ask them for some grounds im sure theyll help you. I get mine all the time about 50 pounds a week. Ig you rum into ant problems with it ask the management or the owners. Tell them youll donate a certain amount of money to s charity in their name. It costs them nothing and it guves them the satisfaction of knowing that their grounds are being used for something and their, also helping a charity for very little effort. All,the managment has to do is give the word to their workers to dump all coffee grounds in a certain bucket. All you have to do is pick out the filters and dump them on the patch or comppst them. Its a win win situation. I get my grounds by the bucket full. The staff their know me and are happy to see me. Good luck

VT Steve, I also read your diary post and feel your pain. I was trying to get grounds from my local Starbucks last winter. Sometimes they had them, and other times they would pitch them in the trash. It seems to me that they have a lack of communication between shifts. The workers just don't care in my opinion. I gave up on them for now. Just my 2 cents.
Snoman911, be careful, too much can be a bad thing.

You have to make sure you use regular coffee grounds so the worms will work much faster and break up the soil. You wanna get as much work out of those worms as possible. And if possible add some sugar to the soil and heavy cream so the worms have a flavor they really like. That's gonna attract more little helpers to the patch...good luck....

I take them from a local mom n pop store, filters and all they just put them in five gallon pails, and when there are 3 or so full, every two weeks or so, I take them and add to compost pile. They love the fact that they dont have all that weight in their trash.

I take 5 gallon buckets with lids to local coffee shop. I trade them out so they have a clean bucket. I usually get five gallon a week.

Hi I have tried to get grounds from the local Tim Hortons. The owner stated it is to much work for his employees.

Pap, jittery is better. I only use French roasted to really get the worms to work hard during the day. In the evening I spray a fine mist of Bud Light over the patch as incentive for the worms to make more helpers. No Budweiser or else they will be hungover.

Is it necessary or preferred to compost coffee grounds before applying to your ground?

Keep in mind, most decaffination processes use chemicals.
Joe you can add them directly, and composting never hurts anything though.

i had one starbucks that was so horrible about it, they would put my tub out by the backdoor and the trash man would take it away (or so they gave that excuse). my current starbucks is much more accomodating (but word has gotten out and i'm competing with 5 other people for the grounds there! boooo)

My thanks to all who responded to my diary entry. I thought no one would even look. Lol.
I now have a working relationship with a Starbucks in Burlington, VT, and the stockpile of bagged coffee grounds is growing.
Christy, maybe those 5 other people want to grow another 1725(or 1810).
More to come in my diary.
