as a newbie to growing AG's I was reading through many old posts and found one where Pap describes a vine pattern he describes as "box, pumpkin, pitchfork". I see the obvious benefit of this arrangement eliminating stem stress, but are there disadvantages to terminating the main so quickly?

Some have suggested that terminating the vine causes some hormonal changes in the plant that can reduce pumpkin growth. It isn't proven but an interesting theory. Certainly there are some giants that have been grown on plants with terminated main vines.
