This weekend my family and I said goodbye to my grandpa. At 84 he had seen alot change over the years. He retired after 60 years in the coal mines of WV and VA and battled with Black Lung Disease for as long as I can recall. The last I had really spoke to him was in 2009 when he came down to see what would become my 1258 pumpkin my rookie year. He loved seeing it and I have a picture of us with it and that is the memory I will hold onto. So really what I am saying is to take time out of our busy lives and call, write, email or whatever you can to family and friends that are not close by. You never know when that goodbye will be the last. My Mom can attest to this, living hours away and not having talked with him as often as she would have liked and having to say goodbye at the memorial has really hit home and she is taking it hard. So try to take a little time out and tell your loved ones that you care. Rick

Rick, please send me something about your grandfather. I haven't received any submissions in a long while for the pumpkin memorial site. If your grandfather influenced you in any way in this crazy obsession, he would be a welcome addition. My e-mail is [email protected]
PS- as someone who recently lost a grandparent, I know the loss. I wish they could stay with us forever for the guidance and advice that we may have taken for granted while they were with us.

Rick, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Saying goodbye to those that have raised us or been important to us is one of life's hardest events. Your Mom and your family will be in my prayers as you say goodbye.
