With spring all most here, we are all thinking about the seeds we well be putting in the ground. Start assumabling our supplies,a trip to our local corporate stores for growing pots, growing lights, heaters, soil to start the seeds in,small green houses,FERTILIZER,hoses, material for wind brakes, and the list go's on and on. We pay for all of these items,we pay the local dairy for their waist,we have over size water bills for the next few months. SEEDS O Yes many of us expect the best growers to give us their seeds free,WHY should we expect this? If we do, shouldn't we expect the corporate stores to do the same? It is my thought that if a grower is welling to send you a bubble that you asked for,Wouldn't it make you feel a whole lot better if you would send him or her a check for $25 to a $100 in a thank you card for each bubble you receive. This would be a very small percentage of the total cost we each spend to grow a big pumpkin, each year.
If a grower would like for some one to plant their seed and send it to them with out being asked that is a whole different story. Let's start 2011 out right, and get the THANK YOU CARDS going with a little of something in them.
I'm sure a lot of you don't agree, and that's all right.
I well allway's beleive that we ALL should be reworded for our WORK.

If individuals are selling there own seeds for profit, I am sure seed counts in great crosses and monster pumpkins will coincidentally go up, all of a sudden every monster pumpkin will have 800 seeds in it!

I think growers selling seeds for profit is a very bad idea, if done seed fraud will eventually rare it's ugly head.

I think growers should continue to share and trade seeds form there fruit, this is part of what makes this hobby so great! Why mess up a good thing?

I dont see growers selling their seeds. Everytime the idea comes around it is shot down. Part of the fun of growing is getting and trading seeds with other growers. I'm attempting to grow pumpkins on the cheap this year(attempt being key), and part of it is the box full of great seeds I got from growers for the price of postage. Many growers are just happy with one of their seed possibly seeing dirt and a lot of HH's have taken up the policy of asking growers to only ask for seeds they plan on growing, which is fine.

I see no problem with sending a cash gift for seeds freely received. Not many people will be offended. But making it a common practice to send and expecting to be sent money could cause a lot of problems.

This has nothing to do with selling seeds, that is a whole different story.
Being thoughtful and sending a gift showing your appreciation well not offend any one. I've never had any one mail my check back and tell me it offend them, in fact I have received a thank you from each one of them.
TRY IT YOU'LL LIKE IT.

EG, I did have a grower return my check, because, he explained, the seeds were FREE. That grower has long been a mentor and distributor of his fine seeds to aspiring growers of quality pumpkins, and I will not embarrass him by praising him any more than I have already.

BUT I agree with you on the point of sending a donation with a SASB. I believe if a grower has worked long and hard to grow a seed I want, that grower deserves something in return for his or her time and money spent. A donation can at the least be used to compensate for those who put insufficient(if any) postage on their SASBs when they request seeds.

But that's part of MY code of honor, and I don't expect anyone else to do that.

Why are people so hung up on this money for seeds thing? This is a hobby that is fun for everyone, small grower or top grower.Growers offering seeds from their pumpkins are doing it so others can grow a pumpkin from one of their crosses, not to make money or expect it.Everyone I asked for seeds were glad to send me them.Only two said they were selling their seeds, and I won't be growing them.Read free seeds, from Ron Hoffman-seed exchange 1/28-it says it all! If you choose to spend tons of money to grow a pumpkin, you can't expect others to pay your bills for you!
