NC Auction sold over 1000.00 in seeds last nite.We need to get G.P.C to put prize money for Melons back where it was 10 years ago.Squeaky wheel gets the grease!!! Lets Go Melon Heads!!!! $1000.00 1st place ,500.00 2nd place 250.00 for 3rd Thats where it should be.If your 4 this, post a response. We can then copy this and send to the GPC officers.

I'm sure the GPC has taken notice of the recent ramped-up increase in melon growing and seed prices. While there has always been an interest in growing giant melons, this past growing season and subsequent off-season has seen an explosion.
I can only think this increased interest is due to two reasons:
1. It takes a TON of time and money to be competitive as an Atlantic Giant grower. 2. We ALL want to be a world record holder.
In time, provided the interest continues at the current pace, giant melon seeds will command an auction of their own.

Yeah, I think it's cool that melon seeds are finally getting recognition. It's usually about this time every year I start ranting about no melon seeds in the auctions. Not true this year though! We still have the Grand daddy of all watermelon seed auctions coming soon. Talking about the Lexington Little Little League auction...

Just trying to get attention on this Matter. If the Melons are bringing this kind of money.Should they not get some Back???And dont say its not about the prize money,Then why do they have prize money???Wheels turn slow in Big organizations just trying to get it started. You dont have to grow melons to support this.Fair is Fair .

Sad to see seeds selling so high, when we have always traded them.

Even though the seeds are selling high and prices at auctions are high I have traded several melon seeds for pumpkin seeds for our raffle this year so trading is still alive and well. Heck I've also sent several bubbles to people who wanted good but not great seeds to get into the groove first so to speak.
I'm looking forward to trying these monsters this year and hopefully can break 100 lbs

#1) I started growing cause i like to grow things & it looked like fun.
#2)Is it hard work & expensive.. YES
#3)Do i like the prize money if i win?.. See #2
#4)Would i grow if there was no prize money...See #1
I took my biggest melon to the smallest prize money weighoff, The money wasn't a factor. I wanted a GPC site to weigh at. i trade seeds for free. i help the clubs raise money. I don't see a problem with either.

I started growing in 1996 the 50,000$ Ray Waterman put up for first 1000pder made it exciting.I grow for the love of gardening its why God put us here Genesis 2:15.Had a garden as a teenager,If I was growing for money it would be Mary Jane much more money than kins 400$ an once they say & its legal I can get a permit.I just hate to see another year go by no good prize money for Melons,We will sooner or later have or own Auction Melon Heads United World Wide. the M.H.U.W.W.or something like that. Why wait,Lets unite now!I love The GPC and want to weigh here in Michigan. So lets do it with them Who do we have to sleep with to get the ball rolling??LOL Just ASking!!!
