This might be a dumb question. but Is it possible to to eat an Atlantic Giant. I was talking to a friend of Mine and he asked if it was possible. I really didn't know what type of answer to give him. Is it possible ? Has anyone? I told him that I wouldn't due to pesticides and chemicals used not to mention that it just doesn't seem practical...

If you grow organically you can possibly eat it. My husband and I experimented last year with one. Tasted best chopped up small and put into fruit salad.

I am often asked that question during TV interviews and also how many pumpkin pies could be made with a 1300 lb. pumpkin.
My wife and I cooked some for pie our first year of growing (25 years ago) and it was soft, tender and tasty.
But after studying all the chemicals I sprayed on it, I decided to stop using it for pie since "I did not want to glow at night" - the reporters usually chuckled at that answer but I'm sure there is some truth to it. Needless to say, we have not eaten any since.

I make pie with them and they are the best. I control the chemicals I spray. Can you say the same for the commercial pumpkin growers?

Yes, you can eat them just like any other winter squash. I've made pies, breads, cookies, cakes and ice cream from AG's. The only differences I've noticed is that the AG's seem to hold a lot more water than the other types of winter squash and aren't as sweet as some others. I've also found that the darker orange the fruit the sweeter it will be.

Personally, I think there are way better varieties for eating than Atlantic Giant. All depends what you have and how hungry you are, I guess.

Thats a lotta pie. What part would be the best area to choose. I'd like my wife to make a few pies from it. Is there a special part of it that I should be looking for.

I tried a pie this year and I also found it to be watery, even though I drained the cooked pulp overnight. Deer sure like em though. My 923 was gone in less than a week!

Here's an easy way to figure out how many pies your biggest pumpkin could make!! Take let's say a 1300 lb pumpkin and multiply it by 16 (16 oz to a lb) to convert lbs to ounces. So you now you have 20,800 ounces. Phew! Then divide the 20,800 by the amount your pie recipe calls for. My recipe sez a 1 1/2 cups of mashed pumpkin which equals (8 oz in a cup + 4 oz (1/2 cup)=12 oz. 20,800 oz divided by 12 oz=1733 pies!!! Oh and the giant pumpkins I grow are organic and we cook pies, soup, muffins, etc and it is great..If ever I grow them non organic, I would never eat them with all those chemicals..

If you haven't sprayed talstar/merit in last 30-45 days you can eat them; they tend to be bland and watery, you will have to adjust for firmer custard and more spice.
