Hi I teach social studies at Letchworth Central school in Gainesville, N.Y. yes.. I know it is in the middle of nowhere and we have more cows than people here.LOL I hope this is not an unreasonable request. I am helping our FFA/Ag Teacher keep interest in the FFA program by getting younger students involved. There are about 40-50 kids who are in middle school and have tons of enthusiasm. Many have limited growing space, so we are contemplating a giant sunflower/ corn lesson/contest. I am not looking for world record seeds, but just seeds capable of growing bigguns that will excite the kids over the summer. Does anyone have extra corn or sunflower seeds they might like to donate? We are going to hold basic growing meetings in May and have the kids start their plants in the school's greenhouse. I am going to supply some type of prize for the biggest of each (Mickey d's gift certificates) and all of the kids would get a computer generated, colorful growers' certificate. We hope this will encourage the kids to move up to pumpkins and squash as their confidence increases.Hey, they are our future in the sport. I know Iam not a heavy hitter, but this should be loads of fun. We could post a diary online here to keep track of their progress. I apologize if this seems too much to ask, but hope for them them to have seed better than the standard catalog grade. Each participating student will start out with three plants of each. Thus, making the project reasonable in scope and size. We want to make it achievable for the kids in their age group, fun and stimulate their interest in plant science. Thanks- Bill Price [email protected] or school number 585-493-2571 or home 585-322-7728. Thanks for taking the time to read this! Have a great day!
