Nana and Pompo…….. Hmmmm let me see hereZ… Remember YOU askZed.... I just received a seed package today, from another…..NANA….NANA Rea…..in Ohio….so my mind iZ rollin…… Ahh.. ..Pompo....My Pompo was born in Colorado...but hiZ father is buried at a local cemetery here in Colorado, his dad came over from what waZ once Yugoslavia/Austria....hiZ headstone iZ in old country lingo...and I’m going to send the writings to one of our club memberZ....Mojca to help me decipher it.....Now my NANA iZ a story….. IF I may…….. She came over on the boat to ElliZ Island in 1919....her father a shoemaker was already here with a job in the coal mineZ of COLORADO....... She came over from ...Espana, "Arco De La Frotera" ...meanZ….”close to the sea”..... at the age of 6 yearZ old......and as a child she remembered seeing the Tall ShipZ....in the channel closed to her home.and casting her first vote for Roosevelt when women got to vote... See, she told me all this at the age of 99.....I loved talking to her night after night after POMPO passed in his mid seventies....I was number one grandson....and took a major responsibility for taking care of her....she would tell me how Pompo would take me to the local pubZ on hiZ shoulderZ and brag about hiZ first grandson. (ThatZ why I like Beer)...lol

Pompo was a meat pack worker for AmourZ, with hiZ brotherZ...sporting only lil stubZ for pinky fingers on each had due to his profession, he was one of 7 siblingZ...4 boyZ, 3 girls... Boy did he like…the polka and the accordion…all hiZ brotherZ played….I remember them getting together…playing and dancing and drinking……Boy what a time…waZ had by all……. Pay attention now BIZ>....in order....On PomoZ…side…. Anne, Frank, Joe, Pompo (Louis), Toni, Agnes, and Mary. Nana remember’d everything…… Nana said, she could still feel how hard the seatZ were on the train coming over to COLORADO....with nary a pennie in their pocketZ, they all traveled with her mother to meet up with her father, Manuel, they had not seen for a couple of yearZ…… They had to stay for weekZ at Ellis Island, a rope tied around their waist to keep them all together until they could find their sponsorZ. You see they couldn’t match up the nameZ because Manuel MunoZ...ahh the story on the real "Z".... did not apply for their visa in her mother’s maiden name, they stayed there for weekZ…..waiting…. until they figured it out. Nana, (Josephine) was one of 8 siblingZ..... Joe, Josephine, Jenny, Toni, Louie, Manuel (deceased as a young child) Manuel again, and Mike. Got it BIZ?

Nana's mother Mary...helped run a homestead in Colorado with Manuel as he worked in the mineZ. She told me how her mother would take care of all the homesteaderZ on the ranch, cook,...., and exchange their goodieZ for meat with workerZ on the ranch would hunt for…. She took care of the GARDEN with her mother and made bread she would bake in an earthen oven. Their water came from holeZ in the ground they would collect from the runoff. They heated their house from coal they would collect from the train trackZ they would walk along....as kidZ. All this she remembered in her late 90's....I loved calling her up and talking to her for hourZ on end.....aZ one can tell..... Nana used wordZ like compensatory ....she never went to school...instead being schooled at home... and she waZ quite the seamZtress... but boy did she have a mind..... I loved her so....and as a child growing up...Nana and Pompo would come over every weekend...I am the oldest of 5...4 boyZ and one mean siZster....BiZ iZ the youngest...lol . As kidZ when Nana and Pompo left...we would cry....so they would circle the block...come back pick us up...take us for a lil ride....then drop us back off....Every Sunday...after Catholic church waZ over...Pompo would stand at the back...and hand out coinZ to the lil kidZ, once mass waZ over....he too was one hell of man....I admired so much.... I sit here now with tearZ in me WiZ eyeZ....as I miss them so ......Pompo would take us fishin...never a dull time....many the memorieZ....the storieZz...I could go on forever..... Nana alwayZ told me....I had a different mind...than otherZ....I could see thingZ....in my ....."little mind".....I believe her....even to thiZ day....so there...a lil info on The WIZ....and even the BIZ.... Nana died on Christmas eve a couple of years ago at 99 yearZ young………I miss her so………Pompo too,
I need a tissue….. . .
I am a “Pompo”, Take Care....I
