I don't no why the 689Beauchemin has'nt been planted more, it is a 4th generation of 898Knauss. It is solid 898Knauss. Especially with the 898Knauss being the #1 choosen pollinator.

Richard, I am really trying to decide on what seed I should get to grow next year. There are lots of different seeds out there and a lot of different opinions.
What do you mean about the 898 Knauss being the #1 pollinator?
How would it be different then a kline or urena or debacco or stevens or or or, you know what I mean.
Are you suggesting that the pollinator effects greater size in the fruit or it is the pollinator to use for future generations.
What happens to a 898 knauss x self?
Just wondering and trying to learn.
And if I want big and orange. ?
So, what seed should a person get?
thanks for any info,

I'm still a begginer, with a pb of 324. I'm actually using the posting that was just posted in ag genetics and breeding, subject is Top Pollinators. I did believe that before I read the posting. If you go to aggc.org and look at almost all the heaviest pumpkins, and look at the family tree, almost every one has the 898knauss in it, often more than once. "I'm suggesting" it looks like a cold hard fact that the 898Knauss has been the most choosen seed to pollinate growers plants, there must be a reason. The 689Beauchemin is 898Knauss pollinated by a 898Knauss, 4 times over, it is solid 898Knauss, was wondering why more growers have'nt used it more

I'm a firm believer in the 898 Knauss genetics, but if you are bringing up the 689 Beauchemin why not go with the 820 Beauchemin, It is 689 Beauchemin x 898 Knauss and has one progeny 724 Kaczenski (13.46 % heavy) or try to make your own 898 crosses with the 503 Beauchemin which is same cross as 898.

and for the record the 689 is not pure 898, it has 790 Daletas ( 879 holland x 801.5 Stelts ) as the pollinator on the 1074 Beachemin

689 beachemin ( 1314.8 Beauchemin x 898)
1314.8 Beachemin( 500 Beachemin x 898)
500 Beachemin ( 1074 Beachemin x 898)
1074 Beachemin ( 898 Knauss x 790 Daletas)

there in lies an issue, although the 790 produced nice progeny it does make the 689 beauchemin line not pure 4th generation 898. But not to say don't try it. I have a 500, 503 and 1314 Beauchemin. along with many other 898 pollinated seeds. Which is the best to plant? I have no idea! is my soil right for the best growing, i doubt it! sooner or later these will see dirt and have there chance at glory or failure.

My genetics project has the 689Beauchemin, pure 898Knauss except the 790Deletas, the 340Beauchemin, a 898Knauss knauss remake, (503Beauchemin x 898Knauss), and the 750Mudd, the opposite cross of the 898Knauss. I wanted a seed with alot of 898Knauss in it, I'm half way done making it. In two years I will also have the 1375.5Liggett and the 1169Jutras (1354Checkon x 845Bobier), the 1375.5Liggett and the 1354Checkon have grown the two biggest pumpkins size wise, I want that in the mix also.

I think the basic answer to you question of why the 689 hasn't been planted more is the fact that it weighed 689. If it was a 4 generation 898 that hit the scale at 1,200 or more I'm sure it would have been planted by quite a few heavy hitters. While the 898 has tendency to go over chart estimate, truthfully in today's lineup of heavy seeds it's never produced anything all that big by itself. That's why it's the #1 pollinator and not the #1 producer.

I am settling into nice long blocky fruit with seriously evenly thick walls and no signs of cracking or internal defects...

I could list several. Don't discount if you can't get THE seed, look for it to be the momma of another or it's momma as a cross in someone else's work.

I think the future of hitting 2k is going to be structure (then dump Biotamax on it, write off the seedcount) then push for the finish line. (just wish I hadn't lost 2010 on planned crossings, sigh)

898 Knauss as pollenator in a line, that one does awesome...
1248 Ford in a background (aka 664 Liggett) gives aggressive vine growth...
There are several lines showing 20-30% over in very thick solid walls...

I agree on 689 being a sleeper but on the pollenator side. Maybe in a few seasons I might be ready for that cross... heh. Just my .000002 cents worth.

We really like the 898, but decided to take a different approuch. We wanted to try to keep any vigor in our crosses if they have much at all. We talked to a cattle farmer & asked him a bit about the genetics of his cattle. This is what he talked about, so that is what we did. We have worked on a cross for the past 5 years & it's finally completed this year. We crossed the 898 Knauss into them, only in every other cross, starting back with the 1068 Wallace (845 x 898) x 842 Eaton. Check out the 1080 Hunt (1678 x 898) from this season & look at it`s background. It's our choice to grow the 1st 2K fruit.
