I'm no longer trading seeds, I will be going to if you will grow it next year send a bubble and I will send you what you will grow, hopefully this will not offend anyone. I will be donating seeds to the OVGPG for there seed sale and there will be some of my seeds in the upcoming auctions. Were to a point that the old way of trading seeds just doesn't make much sense. How many great hot seeds are sitting in some ones seed collection that will never get planted for one reason or another and are not available from the grower because he or she sent them all out. And it's getting to a point it's to much time and money out of my pocket to get seeds that I'm not going to plant and have to store and keep track of. I would rather just ask the grower for the seeds I want to plant.

That is exactly the point I was trying to make last year at this time. Why should some one other than the grower (and pumpkin growing organizations of his/her choice) be in charge of an 1161 ROdonis, 1385 Jutras, any Werner seed, etc? Send what will be grown, period.

This also is one way to take charge of fake seeds being passed off as has been the problem in the past.

Kudos to You Quinn for making the move.

I respect your decision to change your way of distribution. I would like to thank you for your generosity of giving seeds and information to new and experienced growers alike. It means a lot when a new grower can send a bubble to a grower of your stature and receive seeds back. I remember reading Pap Wallace saying he sent back bubbles because he could remember the excitement of receiving a bubble stuffed with seeds in the mail. I would like to thank growers like the Werner's, Harp, Van Hook, Stelts, Rose, Stevens, Connolly, Wallace, Kuhn, Sherwood, Rodonis,Jutras, Pukos, Checkon, Liggett,Glasiers, Beauchemin, McKie, Wolf, Bosworth and several other for there generosity. These old ways built friendships between growers that will continue for years and years. I know these bubbles are a lot of work, expense, and aggravation, but just remember how it felt when you received those special seeds and also remember when some of those growers would grow a big one from your seeds. I just hate to see the changes I fear that are coming. Thank you again Mr Werner for all your work and generosity you have given to us. Tim Pennington

I don't see anything to fear in the changes Tim, actually I think it will be better. I'll use Quinn as a example since it's his thread. You e-mail( or write) to Quinn asking for a certain seed to plant & the following year you grow it, now you have credibility with Quinn. Do the same with other growers & credibilty builds with them as well & with this website ( and chat rooms) your trust can be built very quickly & the ability to obtain seeds your going to grow builds as well.
I get the chance to meet Quinn,Jerry Rose,Dave Stelts and many others once a year at a weighoff & all of them are good guys that want to help.
As long as you give respect you'll always get it back. It's all good..

I am a relatively new grower and I agree with Mr. Pennington ...the excitement of getting seeds from great growers is awesome! I also understand and respect the hard work and time it must take those same great growers to fill all the seeds requests! However....I thought thats how truely great seeds were proven! By getting the current selection of seeds in the ground....by many different growers...regardless of skill level....and finding out which ones are truely going to grow big fruit! Just my opinion. A huge THANK YOU to Mr Werner and ALL the heavy hitters who have taken the time to fill seed requests!

@pumpkin buck - he isn't saying he will not be providing seeds -- I think it is more disappointment with the state of things where growers send bubbles to him and receive seeds with no intention of planting them and then turn around and exchange them for other seeds or sell them to try and make a buck instead of planting the seed. Unfortunately as the hobby is growing and the auctions are getting ever higher prices for seeds more and more people are after seeds they think will be worth more in the future and storing them to try to gain out of them instead of planting them !

More than two edges to the blade...

The auctions are the major way some clubs can raise $ to put on the weighoffs, that recognize the people that grow and what they grow... I can support that cause.

Some put together promo packs, for their club or another worthy cause (such as the OAF) that are sold to raise funds. I can support that cause.

The seed collector, when a seed should be grown instead of a barter chip or 'investment'...

I try to be honest about and ask first over the sending of the bubble. Being told no; that is fine. Not getting the bubble back, I understand. Not getting what I asked or hoped for in the bubble, I understand that too.

And the grower. They put the effort, and the $, and the time, into that seed.

The thrill of just starting and someone stuffing that bubble, just because. I've had my turn at that [my infamous happy-happy-joy-joy-bubble-dance at the post office...] Many great growers have been generous and continue to do so. Thank you.

I respect and support Mr Werner in his choice of how he wants to distribute the seeds of his growing. :) Very few have attained the success and respect amongst the growing community that he has.

Thanks Quinn, for bringing this out.

Makes sense to me. I think some people tend to hoard seeds.

Who hoards seeds??? LOL!!!

I can't help it personally, I love the trip out to the mailbox, its like Christmas every day. I also hope it is the same on the other end as well. I may not be as gung-ho for seeds like I once was, but I still love to trade with people.
I do understand the other point of view, and if Quinn, Dave or anyone else switches to a 'promise to grow' for seeds, then that is cool. They have always been ready to give the shirt off their back if you needed it.

I understand how much work it must be for heavy hitters, time and money. For those that make this decision I have no problem with it. The only down fall is for growers who don't have a lot of money to go for a big name proven seed on auctions etc. I will mail out 2 or 3 requests a year and hold the seeds, hoping one of them is a great proven seed.

That's actually how I grew the 1424 werner this year. Grew a personal best and county record fruit. Well, originally I was given a 991 urena graciously, but that plant blew up! lol Anyway. I seeds both sides of the aisle and hope some growers will still give out a few seeds in the future too.

I personally agree with your decision Quinn. I have several of your seeds, either purchased at the OVGPG March seminar or won through auction. I have asked for only one seed from you: the 1521.5. I promised to grow it and I did. Although I failed to get a fruit from it, I DID manage to use it as a pollinator. Thank you. I asked for seeds from you and other growers for our auctions this winter and you've agreed to provide. And you can rest assured that they will be used for that purpose only. I really don't know what more anyone can ask of a renowned grower.

To me, hoarding is unethical. Taking advantage of another grower's generosity for your own gain is nothing to be proud of.

Cool beans to you Mr. Warner!! You are an excellent model for the "pay-it-forward" mentality that most people here have and if I get a chance to send some of my seeds out to people then I would love to keep up on their diary just to see how my punkins "kids" are doing. It would be as exciting as keeping up on my own diary. I bid on 2 lots of your seeds this past January but didn't win(oh well it happens)but I think that to be given some from a BOSS grower like yourself should be given respect and see dirt for that season. By being given a great proven seed... someone is putting faith in you...don't let em down!! My 2 cents..sorry for ranting everybody ;). Erik

I think some have misunderstood my post I will still give out seeds you just have to plant them. I understand some don't plant unproven seeds and feel if they don't have the seed already they will not be able to get that seed. But if I don't hand all my seeds out I will have a extra 200 seeds to give out in the following years to any one that wants' one. At the Oakland weigh off this year I had to turn down a new growers request for a 985 because I'm getting low on them, I gave out two 985's to every one that bubbled me that year, so that's over 300 seeds that were sent out and there is no way all 300 hit dirt. If I would have only sent out seeds to the ones that would grow the 985 I would have had enough for the growers that put them in and I would still have seeds to give out to new growers now.

I can see Mr. Werner's point, even though I don't grow AG's anymore. I am quilty of Watermelon seed collecting myself, I wouldn't call it hoarding, I'd call it insurance. To possibly have the next great proven seed(s). There is no way I will plant all the seeds I have, but if I have hung on to say 9 of the 239 Leonard seeds and someone who has shared with me in the past is in need of one I have no problem sharing with that person, or even someone I haven't traded with before. I have a few 168 Johnson seeds, (Thanks Chuck!) That I traded for years ago. I offered some of them to a GREAT grower in MI because I know he likes that seed and he has shared his seed with me for the past 10 years. A great collection of seeds is something to be proud of, but you can't be afraid to trade or share some of the wealth. As some of you know, I sold a great AG seed collection years ago because I just couldn't get them to grow in my climate, this was 2003 I think. I was all but hanged for selling those seeds, but nothing was said about the person who bought them. And he is or at least was a BIG seed collector. There are many more growers now then there were back then so I can see the concern with running out of seeds. IF I ever grow a big melon again, I will save back enough for myself and give the rest away, that's how I got started and I'm sure most others on here too...

Makes great sense Quinn, think of how many great seeds have wasted away in storage that never saw dirt. Many more people will have the chance to grow good seeds if they are only given to be grown.Quinn has always been generous with his seeds and this will not stop that, it'll just give more people the opportunity to grow some great genetic seeds.

For those who still want to horde seeds you still can, just support your local clubs and purchase the seeds from them. I think with each year as the number of people growing increases the chance to get the hot seed decreases. This way seeds will be grown that are given away not degrading in someones storage never to see dirt.

Now the best thing about this way is you have no question of the seed being the real-deal. everyone has heard the story's of counterfeit seeds and this way puts a end to that.

Keep up the good work Quinn!!!

I agree with what Quinn is saying here and am pretty much doing the same thing this year (swearing off bubbles due to burnout) but at the same time, I never ever ever would have ever gotten a 1385 Jutras if not for bubbling. I'm so split on the issue I hate myself!

I think it is the right way from Quinn, because some collect only the Seeds and later if the seeds are proved then this is exchanged or sold. The sense should not be this if one asks for with a breeder for seed. Who can liked to collect seed at the whole auctions acquire or this agrees in many Seedpromos of the clubs. I myself have got this year and the last year 985 of Quinn because I also wanted to plant him and I have also planted 985 then for it I also wanted to have him. For 2011 I have searched 1031* Werners 07 because I want to plant the next year and become. Quinn was so friendly and has searched his freezer specially for this Seed for me and I am I very gladly now am able to plant these Seed the next year. Greetings from Germany Horst

i think thats awesome that great growers giveout seeds. last year i bought some through auctions. one time i was on chat with don young and chad revier they both offered me seeds so i accepted them and grew them last year. unfortunately i wasn't able to care of them like i needed to due to a back injury. dang missed out on christy's and quinn's seeds last year, well i guess i only have so much time and space and decided to cut down to 4 plants so i could spend more time with each.i would ask quinn for some seeds but it looks like i may be starting a new patch down the road and need to spend a year getting it ready. looking forward to 2012. a special thank you to all the growers who do give out seeds and for the time and effort involved in doing so. dave.

No need to hate yourself, you have to do what is right for you, and for yours. When I was in the UK I offered my seeds for free on a website and ended up wishing I had not ( mine were no where near in your league but in the UK they were pretty special.) It became a chore in the end and one I wish I had not started. I for one totaly understand the way things are turning out. You got the seed you wanted who cares how!
