After years of growing in a tough location, I finally broke the 1000 lb mark with an 1135 this year! The feeling was awesome! I was wondering, who else is a first time 1000 lb grower, and what it was like for you?

I know how you feel! I finaly did it too! I grew a 1041.5 pounder, it is an unbelievable high. I couldn't have done it, without alot of reading from this site. I too, am in a difficult area to grow in, Northern Manitoba. We have just over a 100 frost free days here. I can't wait for spring! Thanks BP

yes it is a great feeling for sure. no where to go now but up. a lot of people may think 1,000 pounds is small now especially when compaired to the 1,500 plus we are seeing however, its still a great accomplishment to start one on the road to competition growing. pap

I'm from Southern Indiana so my conditons aren't near as tough as some of the previous posts.
I was very blessed to be able to grow a 1,039 lb pumpkin and a 900 lb pumpkin in my rookie year. I have heard from many people about all the effort and years of trying before they reached 1,000 so I am very thankful for what I have accomplished.
The great people on BP are the main reason why inexperienced growers can have so much success growing these giants.......a big thank you to everyone.

It sure is a great feeling...I broke into the club myself this year with my 1119.8 grown off the 1385 and crossed with the 901. Looking forward to seeing what this cross will do in my patch next year and hopefully I will keep climbing the ladder.... Many thanks to my mentor Phil and all the others who have helped me reach this goal...
Cheers...

I'm hoping next year I will be in that club with some killer seeds from a fellow grower. Hoping some good quality Ligget seeds will grow a 1st time 1000 pounder!

I accomplished the feat twice this year with a 1,000 lb pumpkin and a 1,000 lb squash. It was double awesome, I cried like a baby! I celebrated for three days.

This year I broke 1000lbs for the first time twice. What an unbelievable feeling to break into the top 10 at Port Elgin my first year there with an 1197.6 lber off my 1161 Rodonis. I still have one more to weigh off my 901 Hunt X 1161 Rodonis that should go over 1000 no problem. I couldn't have done it without the support of all my friends from the GVGO! Go Team Lunatic!

my previous best was 989 . This year we have 3 over 1000 and one to weigh that measures over 1000 with one over 1600 lbs. Going to weigh offs and meeting new people is what makes it all worth while.

Previous here WAS 978 , got 4 over 1000 this summer , 1051.5 , 1056 , 1161.5 , and 1182 ( dmg ) Also had a couple close ones , 975.5 and 967 , quite a feat considering I have to fight those darn vine borers every year .... been many years since we had a nice summer like we had in N.E. and it was about time . DON'T GIVE UP !

Judy, thanks a lot. Hopefully we'll both take it up a notch next year. Greg, it was a great feeling. Missed you at the weigh-off. Hopefully you'll be back next year. Shazzy, that was one of the finer beers I've had in a long time. Couldn't have done it without the seed you gave me. Told you karma would find its way back to you mr. state record! Congrats to all 1000 lb first timers! Best of luck in the future!

In our first year of growing, we were able to get 727.4, 967, 1010 and 1280 pound pumpkins to the scale, win a GPC event and set a new state record. We should quit now because I think we used up all our good luck! Thanks to Chad Revier and all the people that helped us along the way. With out you none of this would have been possible.

I am calling this my first year growing. I grew some last season, but, just to give you a sample of what I did ....
I put 3 seeds in a mound about 8" high and 20"s round. Don't laugh yet, it gets better. I would walk right up to that small mound (probably crushing the roots) and pour water directly on the stumps, which by the way never got bigger than my thumb . Needless to say, I only grew a 200 pounder, with a rotten stump from all the water I put on it.
Then I found this great web site called "bigpumpkins.com", and started reading, and reading, and more reading old posts, and asking a lot of questions, and looking at old diaries. Things turned out much different this season, for the better of coarse. Before my plant even exited the hoophouse, the stump was already twice as big as anything I have ever grown !
Since I never had a clue how to grow these things, I am calling this my opening season.
I grew a 1157 est dmg,a 1127, 856 est, 772, and a 645 on a small flag pattern plant.Even though my plants were in bad shape at the end of August, I am very happy with my rookie season ,and looking forward to next season.
Thank you bp.com and thanks everyone who has answered my questions. Lee Zappa
