This is directed towards the Elk Grove weigh off. I saw numerous color violations in the squash competition. None of them were disqualified and still got participant ribbons. How is a giant marrow and a cucumber allowed to be in the zucchini competition? Isn't every pumpkin entry supposed to treated the same regardless of its size? Mine wasn't which was very disrespectful.

I'll let the Elk Grove folks answer your complaint. But I do have two questions for you: 1) what is the definition of a zucchini and 2) What exactly is the diference between a marrow, zucchini, and a courgette?

Well a giant marrow clearly isn't a zucchini. http://home.comcast.net/~sunflower_info/Marrows_files/nwr_marrow_137_mark_baggs.jpgI think courgettes are any type of summer squash.

Squashes generally refer to four species of the genus Cucurbita native to Mexico and Central America, also called marrows depending on variety or the nationality of the speaker. These species include C. maxima (hubbard squash, buttercup squash, some varieties of prize pumpkins, such as Big Max), C. mixta (cushaw squash), C. moschata (butternut squash), and C. pepo (most pumpkins, acorn squash, summer squash, zucchini).

I know that but according to gpc rules only green, blue, and gray are accepted colors.

How was your pumpkin treated differently than the others? I was at the weigh-off and thought it was well run. I think over 50 pumpkins were weighed by a very competent staff. If you or your pumpkin was treated differently than everyone else I'm sure it was unintentional.

The only 'squash' that the GPC oversees is the Atlantic Giant Variety. I am the West Coast GPC representative. Please send me pictures of what you are concerned about.

I just didn't like the fact that they didn't dq squash were the wrong color. My pumpkin was put in the wrong area. I'm not sure if I have any pictures of them but they allowed pink and white fruit when the rules said only green, blue, and gray were accepted.
