How long do most of you start compost. Or when do you think its best to use the compost?

I have my huge compost pile going all the time. This fall I'll add leaves to it. I've hauled in tons of corn silage, cow manure and haylage this summer.

Not having the room to compost the amount that I use Kenny, I buy it from reliable sources that are able to provide testing data on thier products.
I've found a local source that uses cow manure from dairy sources, chicken manure, horse manure and vegetable scraps from packing facilities...all lovingly turned and mixed till it is ready.
Like brat, I'll stock up so I've got some for burying and covering vines during the rapid growth stage.

I started last fall with maple leaves, apples ,coffee grounds, and vege and fruit scraps. Not to much happened to it over the winter even though I turned it a few times. Once it warmed up it broke down real nice. It looks like black, lumpy potting soil, and smells like soil. I will save that stuff for next spring to add to my mounds. I will test the ph also just to see what it is.
So to answer your question, mine will be 1.5 years old.
