I planted my buckwheat just over 3 weeks ago, and it is just starting to flower in some areas and over 1' tall.
How tall should I let it get before I chop it down, let decay, and continue letting it grow until early october before tilling in?

now. if you wait any longer, you'll be pulling buckwheat all summer next year instead of the usual weeds.
fire up the weed whacker. You might even get another crop of buckwheat in before you plant the winter rye.
