lost pumpkins this year and what did you do wrong to lose them what would you have done differently. It's good to know. the old addage is so true an ounce of prevention is better then an pound of cure...

Lost 2 plants to YVD, better insect control might have prevented that.

excessive rain in Mar, Apr, May followed by three freezes after the third week of May. Put up cloches earlier, channel runoff, or just cut to the chase and put up greenhouses for 2011 (that's the going in plan for 2011)

Excessive rain prevented timely insecticide applications, and we lost a couple to SVB. Working in the patch while on pain pills after surgery and I made a fatal error trying to release a trapped vine from a birdbath pumpkin. That one really hurt, probably would have topped 1000#.

Lost mine to rib splits on a dill ring at day 52.During fast growth periods (30 # plus) always tape it befor you fertilize. Mine cracked in 3 places on the dill ring. I was due to tape on Sunday. I fertilized the day before, and we had 2.5 inches of rain a few days earlier. When I taped it on sunday, it averaged 40 pounds a day, for the last 5 days.
So, If I would have taped it and saw the growth spurt, I would not have fertilized and possible avoided the splits.

Pulled 3 plants due to early maturity and premature aging, of the fruit. I'm guessing the forest I burned in the spring, dropped an excess of potash, on their crowns. Next Year!!
Soil Tests. Leave the forest, for the Trees.
