I live in Florida. Its the end of August, and I'm preparing my beds for the next season. Planting starts in Sept.
Anyway, I bought these Dill's Atlantic Giant Pumpkin seeds from Lowe's several months ago, and I just now found them.
We've only got about 65 days until Halloween, and the seed packet says it needs 120 days.
Do you think that if I planted them now, we'd just get smaller pumpkins?
Or will it be a waste of my time & energy to attempt them this year?
If it works, my 10 year old will be thrilled.
Thanks, :-D

It takes approximately 60 days of growth before you even get a flower to open and become a fruit.

Debbie, I bought some also to practice fileing the seeds. I grew one just to see what it would do compared to my others. All of mine were oblong shaped and none grew to much size(20 to 30 lbs). And that was with me throwing the fertilizer to it. However, I have heard of some people growing them alot bigger. So even if you pushed them, They might not be as good as you hoped. Save them till next year.

Actually instead of saving them for next year - come back to this forum during the winter (After this years pumpkins have had the seeds removed and dried) and check the Seed exchange forum -- there will be a lot of people offering the seeds from this years crop for the small fee of a SASBE (self addressed stamped bubble envelope) and you'll get seeds from known genetics with a much better chance to grow a big one !! and then use those store bought ones to practice on while getting ready for next year.

Debbie, not knowing there are premium seeds, I grew a Lowes seed this year and my pumpkins stopped growing at around day 25 and 100lbs (they were also boats like Farmer said). If you don't mind that, you could probably have one by Thanksgiving. It's fun to grow anyway. See link for a pic of the Lowes.

debbie..you live in florida and even though the sunlight will be lower on the horizon every day..you still have plenty of heat and sun to get a good one for thanksgiving day. it won't be a record breaker...but have fun and get your feet wet and see what happens.... why not? i have a plant growing wild because of early set backs and it is filled with nice sets every day. these will be like easter egg hunting after the first fall freeze. it only takes 40 days of pumpkin growth to get something funky for the front stoop. why not? if it is still growing at thanksgiving nicely in your climate...let it be a x-mas pumpkin. if you want seeds overnighted sent to you...say the word. sept and oct equals the veg. stage....nov. and dec. equals a x mas pumpkin 60 days old.
