Lets say you have a 1000 pound pumpkin. For what ever reason, you have to get it out of your patch. And lets also say your weigh off is 30 days later. You get it weighed somewhere and then you store it in a cool dry place.
How much weight will it lose during that 30 day period ?
Surely some on has done this before.I am not planning on doing this , but I am currious how much a fruit would lose, if any at all.

It depends if you keep a piece of vine in a bottle of water or not.In a cool dry place with no direct sun, I would say +/- 20lb in a month.

Tim, did you weigh it already, or just an estimate (taped) ?
Mehdi, are you suggesting that over the 30 day period, it could actually gain weight if done that way ??? Thanks fellas

I think he means it will lose about 20 lbs, maybe lose a little more, maybe lose a little less than 20 lbs.

That will be great to know Tim if you can weigh it now and then again in 25 days.
I harvested my 672 (from 1255 van Kooten) early last year for a community event on Sept. 21st and then it sat until Oct. 10th before being weighed at a weighoff and it still came in at a whopping 12.5% heavy. Would have been nice to know what it weighed when it was cut from the vine.
Let us know when you can Tim...that would be interesting!

True Don. They may not loose any weight in ideal conditions.
I just looked at Tims diary. His last entry states that he did get it weighed. I think he will get back to this question after the weigh off.

I had a watermelon a couple years ago that was done growing mid sept so I pulled it out of the patch, weighed it on a bathroom scale-90lbs,three weeks later it was officially weighed in ohio at 89 lbs, only a 1 pound loss. It just sat on my porch outside but out of direct sunlight.

G - the driveway has preservative qualities, I believe it's called "The Macadam Factor" or something like that.

I cut my 827 last year on 8/29. After the weigh in I sprayed the fruit with wilt proof and waxed the ends of the stem. It then stayed the week of the fair in 80 degree weather. Then 8 days later it was put it a industrial size cooler at 36 degrees. Where it stayed until Oct 3rd. It was then reweighed and it came in at 800lbs. And was used for a pumpkin display and held up thru rain and frosty nights and on Nov 4th cut apart and saved the seeds. It held up very well thru it all. Got a couple soft spots from the frost. I will be doing the same thing again this year.

It appears from the posts that they loose a little but not much. Good to know for the future.
Thanks for all the posts.
