Fellow pumpkin growers I think we have all thought at one time or another “what is wrong with my pumpkin plant?” We than seek advice form other growers and search the web for help as to getting a proper ID for our problem in the patch. However, looking at old photos of cucumber and watermelon plants does not fit our Giant Pumpkin niche.

So, I would like to try and collect a bunch of quality pictures with some information and hopefully a disease identification to attempt to put together an unofficial Giant Pumpkin Compendium of sorts. I know many people contacted me but honesty I lost track of who was who (sorry).

Please realize that this will not probably come together until the winter in any official fashion but now while this season is fresh in our minds and maybe there are some prime samples sitting in the patch right now that you can take a picture of it will be a step in the right direction.

Lastly, please realize this is not limited to disease but nutrient deficiencies spray damage, frost injury, ozone harm, or anything that is not a healthy plant qualifies.

See the following post for details:

The more detailed information you can provide the more beneficial the end result will be to everyone. I have listed a few suggestions below as a basic guide but it is only a staring place.

Also, send a single e-mail per problem so I can keep everything organized but feel free to send me multiple problems.

****Please put the problem ID in the subject line of the e-mail. ****

Photos:
3 quality photos would be ideal but I will take what you have.

Background information:
-Time of year
-Field conditions
-Recent products applied to the leaves and/or soil
-Method of application (hand pump sprayer, mist blower, other…)
-Speed of progression
-Field history (have you seen it before?)
-Plant part affected (just leaves, leaves and stalks, vines, roots, stalk to vine junction…)

Problem Identification:
-Basic diagnosis
-How did you reach this conclusion (personal web search, Lab ID, “Matt said so”….)

Corrective action:
-What you did in an attempt to fix the problem
-Did it seem to work?

Hope growers will find this useful, and feel free to contact me with any questions. My e-mail can be found in the little envelope located at my Diary page for those who do not have it already.

Ideally this will allow us growers to better identify potential problems more efficiently so that corrective action can be taken quicker.

Just another random thought I had so I am posting it to the community for feedback.

It's not even November yet, going to be a looooong winter.

Honest, a reference guide might be very very nice. :)

Matt you have most of my information on phytophthora (including pictures). The disease was confirmed in two plant diseases lab and I have been using presidio, ranman, tanos, chorothianil to control it. Have'nt killed the fungus but am keeping it supressed. Plants and pumpkins (mostly) are still alive. Yay!
