Did Warnock grow a 403 lb squash or pumpkin in 1904? Accounts contradict each other.

Pumpkin historians, where are you?

Technically, all pumpkins are squash. That said, however, I don't think the 403 Warnock was orange. In Warnock's "How To Grow Big Squashes", he refers to the 403 as a "squash", but later refers to "squashes and pumpkins", showing that he differentiated between the two. This picture: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_01pahgaRXY0/SoqyAuxvopI/AAAAAAAAD00/wNeO9Wtc6Jk/s1600-h/THE_THRE%5B1%5D.JPG shows three fruits from his garden, including the 403 (left), and it's hard to tell what color it was by the B&W. Their texture seems to be indicative of a green squash, though.

You be the judge, they look like pumpkins to me.

Steve Connolly has an article on the new SNGPG website on AG history as well.

I did more research: DutchBrad states it was a 403 lb squash; Willaim Warnock's 1924 obituary states he grew squash; Don Langevin's latest book shows a page from Rennie's seed catalogue showing Rennie's Mammoth Green Squash(skin dark green, flesh golden yellow).

I had to get the facts straight because I'll be a giant pumpkin guide at the Champlain Valley Expo in VT next week, and I don't want to BS anyone.

Thanks to all who replied, and thanks to Ken for the heads up on the SNPGP website.
