we always talk of seed, soil and sun when discussing the important big three factors regarding our pumpkin seasons expectations.
weather was never our largest concerns here in the new england area because we usually had enough of good and bad, rain and sun, etc, to even out over the course of any given season. not so this year though.
the lack of any natural rain, high heat and that dam humidity for so long has taken a toll on a lot of growers pumpkins ability to producr as well as expected.
i certainly am not speaking for everyone because im sure there are some real great prospects out there for sure.there are always exceptions.
i have gained a new found respect for those of you that grow in this crap each and every year. my hats off to ya.
i know for sure ill be going to some earlier weigh offs this year as daily gains have dropped significantly due in large part to growing in these conditions.
my best to everyone pap

When you're a begginer like me having only one season under your belt its easy to top the weight you did the prior year. Last year the rain was way to much and this year the humidity was big and the heat. The plants certainly took a beating with it. But then again it's growing. If we could pick the ideal conditions to grow then we would. I have a goal in mind this year not sure if I can get there or not but we'll try.

pap, i'm interested in the sun factor out of the seed, soil, sun triumvirate. Any idea what is possible with about 8 hours of sun per day?

Pap you are welcome to haul one out this way, that sounds like our year this year, even down to the (deleted) humidity. Beer's cold and grill can be hot in 15 min :)

boys and girls i dont lie and i dont sand bag about anything.
ill be fortunate to get all three to hold until weigh off time.
i have pumpkins measuring 1035, 958 and 865, all doing between 10 and 12 pounds per day as of last sunday.
that does not equate to anything special as far as im concerned.
i do not ever want to be put in the catagory of a sandbagger or better yet? one who lies. for what purpose? its only a friggin pumpkin.
honesty is and always will be the bet policy.

Thanks pap! 8 hours is definitely enough for me. I'd prefer daily cloudiness myself.

Just having fun with any comments I made toward you, your always welcome to Lutefish and a localy made Grain Belt Beer if your ever in Minnesota. (you probably won't want to come once you find out what Lutefish is, its dried whitefish soaked in lye, Swedes and Norwegians love it.)

This year has been a great pain in the end. I would love to learn to sandbag a little bit tho! 90 to 100 every day index from 105 to 115 high heat and high humidity daily. I hope everyone brings a good one to the scales at the finish.

Thanks Pap , mid 90s to low 100s here most of august and only near 80 at night is the extra kicker. I won't complain next year if its just a normal summer with low to mid 90s.
