GPC does not require them to be over 500 pounds. Individual sites may choose to set that bar on their own, but we do not.

Why isn't Circleville GPC?

because they dont want to. they have been asked and inquired upon many times im sure.
they have a long regional tradition and id bet they dont want to change their local attendance rules and regulations to conform to the gpc.

There are a lot of reasons why Circleville isn't GPC. Some of the local growers want it, some do not. Then you have the townsfolk that don't want it open. There's also space issues and time frames set by the pumpkin show committee. It's a lot of politics for anything relating to the Pumpkin Show.

GPC rules state any and all are welcome...Circleville as I understand it says only from their local area. I think, that is why!!! Peace, Wayne

Although the giant pumpkins are the featured attraction at the Pumpkin Show(IMO), they are but a PART of it. The Pumpkin Show is about many things to many people. The logistics involved in opening the weighoff to the rest of the world would be daunting for the Pumpkin Show Committee(giant pumpkin growers do not run the show and have limited input about the weighoff itself). Tim put it very well.

Five State Cimarron Weighoff 16 Oct has Howard Dill, it is audience voted and no weight minimum; this year it also has a $25 prize awarded by our club. The GPC allows the weighoff to set the criteria and/or award anything else. We have no weight minimum, period, some weighoffs do...

Jed, the Howard Dill award, is a GPC award, that only GPC registered sites give. I think the only requirement is that it is (actually) a Dill's Atlantic Giant!!! ie...no field pkn could win!! Then each individual site can put restrictions on it if they like...such as (300# minimum).
GPDude, I understand (sort of) the politics involved, but also know that the logistics of putting on a weighoff are daunting, no matter where you do it...Congrats to all who work so hard to make all Giant Punkn weighoffs such a great experience!!! Peace, Wayne
PS...also kudo's to all the hard working members of the GPC board!!!

Wayne, The Howard Dill award is not exclusive to GPC sites. The Michigan Giant Pumpkin Growers club give one out at each weigh off, GPC and non GPC that is seperate from the GPC award. It's an autogragh picture of Howard Dill on a plack. We do have a 500 lb. min. weight requirement. I think some other sites might have one seperate from the GPC also but am not sure about it. Funny thing is that I kinda had a reputation for being the orange pumpkin guy and haven't won the award yet.LOL.
