can you use these to fill in spaces with old leaves, or is it best to chop them all off and keep the energy going to the pumpkin?

Look down 5 posts I just put a answer up that is similar to your question. The post was "fruit or salad".

I am no expert on growing these things but I have been letting these so called "sucker vines fill in areas of where I have lost old leaves. I do not let them grow out much. Only enough to let two or three leaves fill out and dead head the end. To me it is still feeding the roots below where the old leaf died and can only add more life to the pumpkin. Without doing this I think my plant would be just about all dead in 75 to 80 days.

I have been backfilling with them for the past month since I got Powdery Mildew. It's like a convayer belt over here, but the newest pumpkin is growing fast.
