I received a letter from a grower that is not happy with the way the GPC gives out it's award jackets for pumpkins over 1500#(previously 1400#). The letter came from Indiana & was not signed. I was wondering who else received the letter? Anyway, who ever sent it should contact the GPC & voice their problem to the GPC executive. If you get enough support from the growers, than maybe you can get what your looking for. I'm not associated with the GPC enough to have a voice in their rules, so I'm not the guy to contact. Good luck on your quest.

Phil, go back to the next page on the messages and you will see three threads about the GPC letter. Also another page over there is a thread about the Crazy GPC letter. Sherry

I'm guessing everyone got it. Considering I am on the outer fringes of the pumpkin hobby (I've never been to a GPC event or any other event) and I got one too means they must have used the AGGC website to pull addresses. It's the only pumpkin -related website that has my address. I'm guessing that's true for most growers.

Yepper. I finally have a hard copy to go with the several PDF versions. Somebody dropped a lot of money on paper, ink and postage.
Mailed from Illinois if I recall.
Childish sour grapes. The executive committee of the GPC has already wasted enough time on this matter. We're going to ignore it unless growers want help shredding the paper.
We take these things back to the actual weighoff coordinators to get their feelings. Truth be told...no one really cares.
We knew that some folks live in areas of less than ideal conditions when we all started growing. Make the Harp's, Jutrass', Wallace's, etc an offer to buy their homes. Research their neighborhoods then contact a realtor.

....that or get a new hobby.

Phil, I also received the letter last week. I feel that if this person does not have the courage to sign the letter, he/she is just blowing off steam. I've always felt that if you don't like how things are run, then you get involved with the organization and try to change the rules from within. Anonymous letters very seldom achieve the desired results and are filed quickly in the round file.

Steve...Maybe something more like this: We knew that some folks live in areas of less than ideal conditions when we all started growing. Unfortunately, no one can tell a plant what climate to like and flourish in so we support and encourage long gourds, giant watermelons, giant tomatoes, and cantelopes etc at our wieghoffs and in doing so support the grower community that happens to be outside of the golden zone ! Surely theres a veggie in this mix that may be a better match to your environment.

You could never go with some sort of handicap... where would it end? For example, I think I'm entitled to a 700 pound handicap where I live, lol.... I don't think that is gonna happen!

@ AndyMan. Not really, Muncie is about 2 hrs south of Fort Wayne, 45 mins North East of Indy and 1 1/2 hrs north of Morristown.

I wish I could hunt Grizzly bear here in Ohio and bow hunt a world record kill, unfortunately for me, that cant happen here in my state and Ill have to go to Canada or Alaska for that chance of a big one.
I wonder if the guinness book of world record will give me a booby prize anyway since there isn't any huge grizzly in my area??

Got one. Your supposed to write the angry letter and then not mail it.lol Btw I know for a fact that 1400 pound pumpkins can be grown up here. It's about turning disadvantages into advantages. Deal with it!

If this person would have spent as much time on pumpkins as they did sending out all these letters they would have that jacket. Not everybody everywhere is entitled to everything. If you can't grow giant pumpkins where you are try something else, or put up a greenhouse to control the environment......or take up knitting or something.

Even I got one. Cost him 3 stamps...
If we can grow world records in Holland, than you can grow them almost anywhere if you take the proper measures. Our average night time temperature during the growing season is 46.5°F with average peaks going all the way up to 53.5°F in early August. Our average daytime temperature in the growing season is 64.5°F with peaks reaching 70°F in late July. Not to mention the enormous amount of rainy and cloudy days and high winds because of our approximity to the coast.
Last night it was 44.5°F degrees.
Perhaps we could ask the one pumpkin grower in Muncie, IN to post a watch at the local post office and find the culprit. Or ask Mike of the aggc.org who spent a lot of time on there recently.

I got two of those letters, plus the one that went around last year.
Part of growing is doing with what you've been dealt for soil, climate and all the rest. I may never get a jacket but whoever did that last letter needs to get on with their life.
