I said one wrong think months ago let it go. I just don't like it when someone says I am wrong without even checking to see if it is true first.

They may share the same common name, but they're not the same species.

I must say this. There are plenty of people on this sight that have given bad advice and plenty of people have posted less then favorable comments to those posts. I certainly have had my share of abbrasive feedback. Its natural to have that when you're passion gets the best of good judgement. I think Nic is a good kid and will someday be a heavy hitter providing that he continues to grow. Lipumpkin maybe asking for a seed from Nic....lol! We're all trying for the same thing.

There are common names and then there are scientific names. On a 8th grade bio test I would have given you full credit for tomato horn worm moth or Hummingbird moth or sphinx moth or Hawk moth. (You would have lost half credit for big MF moth though.) On the college bio exam or entymology exam I would have taken points off because that answer is too general. There are over 150 species of hummingbird moths(aka Hawk moths, sphinx moths). All you have to do is go to you tube and watch the vids...many different hummingbird moths. It is impossible to tell in those pictures if that moth is Manduca quinquemaculatus or Manduc sexta sexta or even Manduca occulata for that matter.Only one of these is the tomato horn worm adult, which, btw, is a more northern experience. Down south they most likely have the tabacco horn worm's moth.....which is a more likely candidate in this situation (Kentucky).
But, until 1320 catches one and sends it to me we won't know. (And, by starting a new post and starting it with my name you have in fact "called me out"...lol...and I will endever to correct you every time you screw up from now on....lol...so be careful what you post...we don't want to lead our newbies astray now do we?

My brother is a butterfly farmer and raises both butterflies and moths for a living. I showed him the picture and looked at it, and said - it is an Manduca quinquemaculata (Tomato hornworm). He also said there is a chance it could be the Manduca sexta (tobacco hornworm), but he was about 90% sure it was a Tomato hornworm (something about the lines in the forewing).

How funny this has become! I have a local arguement brewing between farmers around my patch over which hornworm it is. Thanks PB.
