My 1195 Glasier went down this week at about 200#. As I chopped it up, I was amazed by the wall thickness. There was practically no cavity and the walls were 8 - 10 inches thick.

Is this a factor of the age of the pumpkin, or was I more unlucky than I thought?

Age of the pumpkin most likely. If you cut open a small cull there is no cavity.

Lee,
We had a late split last year and just made a genetic cross with the 1385 x 1502. It grew for about 32 days of cool Vermont fall and we harvested it taping at 270 pounds. We carved it on the front lawn and could barely fit a light fixture in it due to its small cavity size.

Thanks guys, I feel just a tiny bit better. Still hurts, though.

earliest fruit for me was my 434 from 06 which was 43 days I believe. It had a mix of mature and not mature seeds. The mature ones went on to grow some great pumpkins.

At 30 days you might find a few growable seeds, but as a whole they wouldn't be ready. After 45 or 50 days you're more-or-less safe.

I always pick a pumpkin early for our local fair. There is only a few entries in the "biggest pumpkin" category and it is only for fun and a whopping $4 prize. I usually just put on the weight as what the estimated chart says. Do you think a 30 or 40 day fruit is fairly accurate to the chart or does the lack of cavity mean it most likely weighs heavy.
