Kelly Klinker

Woodburn, Indiana

To whom it may concern:

To the person who sent me the letter trying to tear down the GPC.

1st. SPELL CHECK!
2nd. UPDATE YOUR MAP! No one in Indiana received a GPC jacket in '06-'09.
3rd. GROW UP! The hobby is to grow the biggest pumpkin, not to give out handicaps because you don't live in the "sweet spot." Hell I live 10 miles away from Beachy. I'm not sure if Japan would be far enough. :-)

I'll try to scan it for anyone who wants to read it.

its unfortunat but there will always be malcontents and trouble makers . always has been ,always will be.

most times these are the same people who have a laundry list of suggestions and complaints but when the call goes out for help they are sitting on there hands.

where would the growers be without a flag ship organization
such as the great pumpkin commonwealth to blend in with?

I am just sorry that Kelly has to waste his time opening and reading this kind of detritus. If it was in the post at least he could put it in his compost. Keep up the great work Kelly!

Got one my self today. I appreciate and support the GPC!! One good point in the letter, tho!!! Towards the end the author tells why he wrote it anonymously, and it seems, so far, that he made a wize decision!!!
PS...last email I got from Mr. Boxworth, he spelled his first name Bruks!!! LOL Grow em Big, and remember...this is supposed to be FUN!!! Peace, Wayne
PS...last fall, I received 2 dozen of the maps w/ dots!!!!

There was no return address but it was stamped from the post office that it was sent from Muncie, Indiana, so maybe that will narrow it down to who wrote it.

After reading the letter, it is not so crazy, but maybe a little misunderstood. I have dealt with many misunderstandings over 13 years of giant pumpkin weigh-offs and judging, and yes, sometimes I feel I was right and sometimes I was wrong. I know people who have been wronged by the higher political mechanisms in the pumpkin community. But to keep to the subject at hand and address the letter:

1. I COMPLETELY agree, the jackets should be awarded based on the current record, if nothing else for planning reasons. The GPC obviouly already had 1400 pound patches printed! Those growers should get the appropriate jackets to wear them on!

2. I also agree that making merchandise available for other growers is a good idea, but the jacket should be reserved for those that earn it by being within 300 pounds of the existing record. Maybe the GPC can consider making a windbreaker available to everyone, along with patches down to say 800 or 1000 pounds. Could be a good income source.

3. The letter writer was completely off base with the whole "where you grow" thing...yes it matters, just like any other plant, so if you want to grow monster squash, you should probably live in the best climate for growing them.

I am VERY proud of my 1000# club t-shirt from the Ohio Valley growers, because I earned it. We need to make sure that we clarify what is earned and when, and make it somewhat reasonable, especially when we contradict ourselves!

PS My first 1000 pound pumpkin got me (us, I grow as a team with John Maston) nothing except the shirt. We weren't even in the top 20! I'm still very proud to make it to this point with the limited resources we have compared to some of the other growers.

Because you did not have enough guts, whoever you are, to include your real name when sending your letter, which I received today, I say go eff yourself a hole.

John: I scanned a copy of the Crazy Letter. I'll email to you. I know the genetics get stronger every year and its easier this year to grow a 1400 pounder than it was 4 years ago. But I think this guy has a point. The first 1000 pounder won the Zehrs $50K. We should keep awarding all the 1000 pound growers $50K I know there are about 1800 one thousand pound pumpkins out there now, but what was fair then should be fair now. right.. And we should keep awarding Jackets to the 1400 pound growers for the next 50 years...lol.

I got mine yesterday. No return address and also sent from Muncie,Indiana. How can you take anyone serious when they can't even sign their name to the letter.

Also I think what the map shows is land values in Ohio should go way up as Ohio seems to be the best place in the country to grow pumpkins.

I got that letter today also ..different.. The only thing I know is my PO box is posted at only one pumpkin site, and that site has a grower from Munice Ind ...just saying

The letter guy has wayyyyy too much time. If he put as much effort taking care of a pumpkin as he did with the letters he would have an Orange Jacket.

while i can certainly understand a 1,400 pound grower from 2009 being disapointed at not getting a jacket ? i dont understand the reasoning behind that harsh ,vulgar, letter that i also received today.

i suspect its very possible a woman never wrote that letter even though references are made to "my husband" on several occasions in that letter. ( i watch a lot of law and order - lol)

who ever it is should realize if you have a stance be man (or woman ) enough to put a name next to your complaints.
no organization is perfect. bar none. sometimes things are done and decisions are made that is not popular but is for the good of the organization.
sometimes the timing could have been better as well. after all is saod and done no one makes their living running these organizations now do they?

i dont really like the fact that two pumpkins ( growers) from a fixed address will no longer be counted in a sites top ten average thats forwarded to the gpc for top ten site competition average. ron and i both grow at seperate patches at the same address and we are both long time growers.
i know why the rule was put in and for the exclusion of those cheeters who always have a second fruit in a non growers name ? it was a good rule change.

the rules apply to everyone.

I like the windbreaker idea for those of us who are less competitive. I may yet be able to earn a plastic garbage bag with cut-outs for arms and head this year. SWEET!!!
