Last week we had 2.5" of rain and the stem on my 1350 opened up. It does not go into the cavity of the pumpkin (yet). I have been keepking it dry and apply captan daily. I am also using a fan to circulate air. The pumpkin continues to gain weight @ the same pace but as it grows the crack grows too.
Is there anything else I can do??

You may have to cut away some side vines to stop the flow of energy to the fruit.

I'd make sure i have good positioning with the pumpkin and as little vine stress at the stem as i can get Chris.

dont cut any vines.thats insane, get a sharp knife and stick in that split and cut straight up to about 1/2" from the mainvine.if there is a split on the bottom part of the stem do the same thing, keep it dry, maybe install a fan, it will be ok.

Yes, Buddy is right!!!!!By slitting the stem, it will open up instead of the pumpkin, but still feed the fruit,,,,,if you're not sure how, come to chat and ask someone that has done it

We need to start applying some lotion or oil to those areas to make it more pliable. You know the stuff pregnant women use on their bellies. LOL

Don't cut any vines, what you stated your doing is fine. I had the same problem in 2006 & every day for a couple of weeks I would clean off the old captan( or sulfer powder)spray the area with peroxide & after that dried I would reapply the powder & keep a fan on it. If you stick a piece of straw in the crack you'll notice the pumpkin has a "cap" to it under the stem. I've seen those openings a lot & once you get it to scar & heal it will be fine.

Here is a pic of it, it was split on both sides of the stem. The left side is showing but the split on the right side was twice as large. I could stick my fingers from one side to another. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=55914

I would like to thank all of you for your very helpfull advise. The split has stabalized and scared over. The pumpkin is not in a tent to keep it dry and I have a light dusting of captain. Dispite a couple days with 25 pound gains the split has not gotten bigger. I am considering doing the slice but have not mustered up the stones yet.
