I have a nice fruit set on the main of my 993 Vincent/McGill at 15' and the main vine has continued past the fruit and is growing stongly.
My question is "when is it safe/advisable to bury the vine to encourage more rooting for the plant past the pumpkin?"
In my region we do not have vine borers or cuke beetles and I bury my vines to protect them from squirrels.
I have plenty of slack in the vine before the pumpkin and have swung the vine away from the fruit's shoulders after the pumpkin to eliminate any future stress and just wondered what other growers do with the main vine and when is safe to bury or cover.....thanks....Glenn

Only the secondaries and the main only where the secondaries are. Be ready to under-cut where the chosen fruit will raise the vine. Bread knives work very well - just don't raid wifies kitchen drawer

Why use a bread knife and not a sharp razor? LOL

because your blood alcohol level in the patch might be a little to much when trimming vines, so its better safe then sorry.

Try to leave slack past pumpkin, then bury out 3 or 4 leaf nodes. You can always cut tap roots and loosen more if needed. Every root system helps!
