On smaller pumpkins 1000lbs or less a 3' wide strip of mill fabric works well, if it gets bigger than that just slide another to the side. A 40lb bag of play sand spread on top of the fabric is all that you need. Sources for the material is extreeme pumkin store sand any local hardware store.

I use a standard piece of cut plywood with some sand under the fruit. Never had a problem with it. The sand allows the fruit to slide a bit reducing the chance of splits.

We just use a 4'x4' sheet of mill fabric under our pumpkins. Our soil is very loose and drains well. We have never used sand and have not had any problems. Sherry LaRue

Builders sand gives a firm sculpt-able base, mill fabric is mouse proof, play sand is rounder so acts like bearings making the ultimate scootchable effect for relieving vine stress.
