I don't think anyone really stops all growth. Just most of it. But now is the time to do so. I usually keep a secondary or two going after I terminate most vines.

first i don't know what you mean by 2-3 set of fruit ? are you gonna keep 2-3 pumpkins per plant or cull down to 1 per plant?? i would terminate some of the first secondary's about the time shortly after pollination of your keeper pumpkin ! unless there already to the desired length, probably 12-14 ft ea, then as the later secondary's grow to the length- term them as well ! but i would let the plant after the pumpkin grow for quite a while ! never term to many at same time, all the power may explode pumpkin!

Some people terminate the main vine just past the pumpkin they intend to keep, some let them grow.

What is the best way to terminate vine growth after you have chosen a fruit?

KRC, with a blow torch. Just kidding, cut it at a leaf node, hit it lightly with fungicide, let it dry and then bury it.

Here I let the vines grow one week more, up to the gardenspace (about 10x10 meters)is used for 100%. Sufficient leaves for fotosynthesis is important.

Terminate the plant when it fills the alotted space. The main vine growth should slow after the pumpkin. You should fill the area with secondary vines that are pre-pumpkin
