OK, so many of my side-vines get to about 6 ft in length, then self-terminate into clumps of small, yellow male flowers. At first this only happened to a couple secondaries, but it seems to be increasingly widespread. My only guess would be a nitrogen deficiency, but I'd like some ideas on what could be causing this.

Tips burned in the heat most likely. Shade them. Simply tossing a white wash cloth on the tip has been effective for me.

Thanks, Andy. Is it too late to fertilize with some N?

Add fertilizer. I had that problem. I added fertilizer it woke up the stunted vines. The fertilizer I added was 7-9-5 if that helps.

Andy knows his shit. I had the same problem.....but mine only got to about 2-4' and clustered up with males.
I did a soil test and found out i had very low n2.
You can throw some urea or calcium nitrate down in small amounts, but it wont make those vines start growing again.
