Some years back Collins, New York was unquestionably the Pumpkin Capital of the World. Ray Waterman's site was the place to be on weighoff day. What a showman! I was wondering where everyone thought it went when it left Collins and then where and where is it now? Also do people feel the amount of the prizes, the number of pumpkins, the weights of the pumpkins or the enthusiasm of the growers are determining factors? Will big prizes shift the capital? What do you say?

Morton Illinois claims to be pumpkin capital of the world as that is where all the Libby pumpkin pie filling is produced... illinois is the #1 pumpking producing state. NM is one of the top 10 producing states ... but dead last as far as state weight record :P But hey, were going to break that! Anyway I think the question should be what is the AG capital of the world....

I'll start of by saying my opinion is biased, but I believe the pumpkin capital is Circleville, Ohio. -Are there weighoff sites that have had larger pumpkins?..yes. - Are there weighoff sites that have bigger top ten averages?..yes. But on the third Wednesday in Oct. Circleville will be holding their 104th ( or 105th I can't remember) annual Pumpkin Show & for that week a city of 14,000 will play host to over 500,000 visitors to the yearly event.

Although I've never been to any other cities which lay claim to the title, I have to agree with Paul. No other event in the world is steeped in as much tradition as the Circleville Pumpkin Show.
Working the giant pumpkin display these past few years has shown me just what fascination the world has with Atlantic Giants. I have seen and met many delegations from many countries who made it a special point to see the Pumpkin Show while visiting the U.S. Having their photos taken with Dr. Bob's perennial winner is very special to them and very special to those of us who work the display. I have taken countless photos for other people.
The sheer number of people who visit Circleville every third week in October is staggering.

I take that back. I think it is the strip of woods by the road at Ron and Pap's house where the candy wrappers and empty Coke cans are always found.

The next pumpkin capital will be in Warren R.I. When yet another world champ will be crowned. I have a feeling that the world champ will come from a New England grower. With the great weather that where having I have know doubt that we'll be seeing some huge abnormal giants.

http://www.morton-il.gov/ Morton, IL claims to be the Pumpkin Capital, I believe the are the leading producer of processed pumpkin in the at the Libby factory. Says it right on their home page, although they have a weigh off (two weeks too early) they have a large festival.

Last fall, I received a map of North America, on which was plotted (w/a lil dot) of any Slunger ever grown. Approx 90% (might be an exaggeration) of the dots, were in what (on this map)was called the "Golden Zone"!!! Not sure if Christy's house was in the GZ, but it was close!!! Now, if we are talkin weigh'off's, I am convinced that the best one...is at Bear Wallow Farms, in Nancy, KY!!!(3rd Saturday in September)!!! I am also convinced that the Capital is very near...Long Pond!!! We are, of course...growing Dill's Atlantic Giants!!! Peace, Wayne

for the sheer excitement and showmanship it would have to be circleville ohio. for prixe money and overall quantity of big pumpkins take your pick parks garden center or the topsfield fair. we dont have enough big tim3e growers in rhode idland to be mentioned in the same breath. we have had some biggins yes but, not the quantity the bigger weighoffs get. parks and topsfield are in contention almost every year for top site honors. id sure like to visit the circlevill show though, its quite amazing im told.

My vote would be Circleville Ohio and even though I've never even been, I've heard stories and seen pictures and know the history.
Then again, after seeing all the media coverage at Half-Moon-Bay, knowing the prize money, knowing they have a PARADE and MARCHING BAND, and even a Half-Moon-Bay song I listen to in my car (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7rWaQ0vq4I), I have to give them honorable mention. LOVE THAT SONG :)
Wayne, can you post a pic of the "golden zone"? I'd be interested in seeing it! Does it shade a certain latitude or what?
