I just posted a picture of the questionable growth. Does it look like a disease or is the main vine running out of energy after the pumpkin?

Cool idea with the time lapse camera! Looks like the leaves on the main tip are healthy as is the rest of the plant. I do know the plant will slow down after the pumpkin is set, just not sure how soon.

Nic, I keep my plants small because I have a small space. What I have noticed is that when my AG take off, growth does stop -- and even self terminate, but it will still look healthy. I may see it more pronounced because I have less for the AG to draw from. BUT ... I think what you may be seeing (or experiancing) is the effect of heat, that is heat stress.

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but I'm sure its early signs of yellow vine decline. Been fighting it here for a couple of years and have lost some really good plants (about 20). Just got it diagnosed about a week ago from our state lab. Most times the signs moves towards the stump. Quite often many tips will show signs within a day or two. I've posted a couple of pics in my diary and I can put up more if you would like.

Let me see those pictures. Has not spread in a week. YVD was what I was worried about when I saw it. Would it help to cut the infected area off?

I've tried with no real success to prune out the bad but I'm still trying. Sometimes plant hangs in there for a long time. None of my plants went down fast (2-3 days). Only had one that I can remember that showed first signs on main it didn't last long, 1596 Wallace. Last year the plants that had the best management early seemed to hang in there the longest, vine covering, etc. even after first signs. I think the extra roots at the nodes help. I was convinced I was over watering so this year I went the other direction. This year its been dry and my water management has been to keep moisture under the main and let the plant work. Big mistake. Side rooting poor and decline much faster than last year. More pics to come in diary.

Nic, after I get heat damage, and the ends terminate, I get new side growth (but if heat continues, that can term too in time ... and so on...). I have not lost a vine completely to heat damage, but it does speed the ageing (leaf senescence) process. Now Brotherdave notes yellow vine decline ... and this sound like it move down the vine twards stump, maybe like bacterial wilt. That may be your guide. I posted head damage in my diary for comparision.

I'm just going to cut the vine after the pumpkin. I will train some secondaries to fill in the gap.
