Longer stems here across the board. Hope they stay long as the fruit mature.

Dave, I dont know about anyone else, and it could just be luck, but I have had almost zero stem issues in the past(knock on wood) with a shorter stem verses one that is longer and moves easier as the vine grows. Maybe its because the shorter stem doesnt have that much play in it to where it doesnt move as much when the vine grows,,
Or maybe its because Im more cautious and make sure the main vine comes up with a shorter stem pumpkin when it starts to grow,,, I dunno though, but thats just me, anyone else see this in a shorter stem, less issues? with it?

I'll let you know at the end of the year. My 1368 has a very short stem and the 1108.5 has one that is very close to a foot. So far, no problems with either, long way till Oct.

i got a short stem on my 991 pumpkin this year. i had to cut 3 taps and some close secondary taps on each side of the pumpkin and from day 15 all the way to day 23 i kept slowly lifting sliding and then later wrestling the pumpkin back more and more away from the vine slowly with time. now i am blocking it higher and higher with growth trying to keep the curve of the vine within the concave area around the stem as much as possible. with good slack, spongey styrofome wedges at ideal pressure spots will move the vine out without causing main vine splits or stem stress. the key is to try to place the wedge between the pumpkin and the vine in the middle of 2 leaf junctions. the main vine although thick and rigid later on, is more flexible there. then when wedged with good slack and enough tap roots cut, a little pressure on a loose main after day 50 will have to be the option. worse case a cut of the main behind the pumpkin and spinning it with a strap and 2 people a little bit is the worse case scenario if the stem stres is going to take the pumpkin down. hopefully i will win the battle and have a 991 with a stem like leonardo's in this pic off his 991.
