I buried (and watered) my vines yesterday and today the vines were all wilted. Soil has plenty of water and I went out and gave the plants a mid-day leaf mist as well. What am I doing wrong for the leaves to wilt after burying?

give them a few days or maybe a week until they establish some tap roots.
With this heat wave going on, stress is gonna happen...misting will help though.

let them mature before you bury will help and or set up shade over growth that's not mature yet

physiologically I can think of no reason that the vines would wilt because you buried them. I suspect the wilting is caused by something else.

Burring put's the leaves closer to the hot ground ergo more wilting

Yes, many years I have experienced this problem. As Mr.T said, I suspect it's the heat from the soil during these hot days. It's quite clear in my patch that newly buried vines wilt much easier during hot weather. When possible (like this week) I wait until cooler temps come around. I've done simple tests such as leaving a vine or two uncovered and the results are there...the uncovered ones don't suffer as much....on the same plant.

what i have found thats helped especially this hot season is to not bury as far toward the vine ends as i would have say a month ago. i leave about two ft of each vine end uncovered. the vines do wilt a bit but i have experienced far less burning on all four of my plants. last year we could not buy three days in a row of sunny hot weather. this year? we cant buy a cloud . its never easy growing these things.
