The 1st main vine female on my best plant will be at around 14 feet and would have been ready to pollinate in 7-10 days, the problem is my neighbours dog severd half the main vine at about 12' this morning. I'm still hoping for the best but it doesn't look great. I'm thinking I should do some side vine sets just in case.
So my question is...if you have to set on a side vine what criteria would you use in choosing which vine to pick? I've got a couple females on my first 2 sides and are probably about 2 weeks away, I was thinking about just polinating a few different ones and going with the fastest grower if my main doesn't work out.

Bummer Chad!! I would choose a secondary as far out from the stump as possible. We are always told to have as much plant as possible behind the fruit so it kind of just follows that train of thought. Might take an extra week or 2 but I think it is worth it in the long run.
I've also read on here that some choose the first secondary off the main if you have what happened to you so the jury might still be out on this one.
1st year I grew I got one 577.5 lbs on the main and the other one at 511 lbs on the first side secondary...go figure!!
Good luck with it!!

Go with a strong growing secodnary just before the broken main.Swing that vine around so it becomes your main.Set a fruit on it and try not to take it out on the dog.

My 921 last year was grown on the 2nd or 3rd side vine so I know not all is lost, I was just really pumped about this plant. In the past 10 days its gone from 8x6 to 15x20 and then this. Thanks guys.

Saw your diary just now Chad and you know how I've had it with the squirrels...so I feel your pain buddy....but got a chuckle from your posting at the same time.
Chin up dude, you'll most likely beat me again at the scales with a broken plant!!

Like cojoe said, swing a strong secondary around and set a fruit on that one. The plant will figure it out. I had to do this last year and I had thought my hopes for 1000 pounds were gone. Wrong. Come October I had 1240 pounds off that secondary.
