Hi Everyone,
For the past 3 years Yellow vine disease has wiped out all of my pumpkin plants each year and it looks like it is going to do the same this year. I know that it is spread through the Squash Bugs and once you have the disease on your plants then most likely the plants will die.

So I would like to know what everyone else has done to prevent this "new" disease. What kind of insecticides do you use to wipe out the squash bugs? Right now I use Merit-75 which takes care of the cucumber beetles but not the squash bugs. What kind of rotations do you use?

Also where do you buy all of these? Where can you buy Warrior-T?

Thanks!
Martin

P.S. What is the generic name fore Warrior-T?

Merit or one of the new generics and Talstar or one of the generics are all you need. Talstar is 7.9% bifenthrin there are many generic versions of it too. In my experience the generics work just as well as the name brands.

I spray the bifenthrin product every week to ten days at up to one ounce per gallon. But I've found that less seems to work just as well. When the plants are young I will use a half an ounce or even a little less per gallon and have never had a problem.

I spray the Merit 75 WP, or whatever imidaclprid product you use, every 3-4 weeks. In the case of the 75 WP I use 1/8th teaspoon per gallon. You can mix the two products together and spray at the same time. That gives you a systemic and a contact killer all in one. I haven't had any problems doing this and its a nearly bulletproof combo for insects.

Warrior T is no longer made. It's called Warrior Z now.

Yellow Vine VIRUS I've heard of. Has this been lab confirmed?

Thanks PA Punkin' Farmer. Tremor, No it has not been lab confirmed yet. However I am working with Matt DeBacco on it and he is being a great help. I have already looked around in PA and on Penn states website for a place but can find none. Do you know of any other places that could test it?

I know squash bugs themselves inject poison when they feed which causes leaves to yellow. Are you sure it is not just that?

Martin, Penn State Dept. of Plant Pathology has a Plant Disease Clinic that has been very helpful to me in the past. Here is the web site:

I'm pretty certain I've had YVD the last two years. No insecticides necessary, floating row cover is your friend. See my diary, insect-free plants are a beautiful thing.
