been very rainy here and i have been staying out of the interior of the plants as much as possible until things dried out a bit. i went into the plants tonight to do a little weeding around my stumps and give them a good looking over. i had 2 very small weirdo pop up secondaries starting to form on the stump that were quickly pruned. these areas near these stange pop ups can lead to fissures. i also noticed one secondary on one of the vines about 2' from the stump that had a very slight brown spot on it at the union with the main. after closer inspection i could see a very minor stress split from the growing secondary in that area leading into the main. i took the point of my knife and scratched out some rot in the fissure. after some more scraping i found the rot had set in about a 1/3 of an inch deep and 3/4" long. from a quick glance over i would have never saw it and missed it completely. it looked just a little brown like staining of a vine from a once buried vine. i was glad to have been weeding directly above it to see it before it got bad. i scraped out all brown to firm fresh green and put captan on it and am covering it with a small table to keep dry. with all the rains, any of these slight fissures as the stumps get more and more gnarley with growth can quickly lead to a rot situation if not checked. it was a nice wake up call to check every leaf junctions and secondary junctions on all 3 of my plants besides the stumps. this rain and humidity will cause rot to set up fast and furious in any crack it can find.

i checked every leaf junction and secondary junction along the main that should read. it would be a very lot of work to inspect all the secondaries at each leaf junction, but that area is also something i look for while weeding to look for rot forming at the base of leaf stalks that might have cracked a bit in the wind.

I trimmed a lot of growth off all my stumps..Older leafs and pop-up unwanted growth..If you want a huge healthy stump it's the only way to go..Followed by a bleach cleansing, I paste pour daconil on questionable areas...

The stump on the 1288 is a hulking monster some minor stressed areas and ligit cracking that has healed over. I'm growing in about 7 percent organic mater and keep the stump free of extra growth and in full sun no doubt that i'll get a monster if things stay the way thay are. Gotta keep an eye on the stump esp. With the moist humidity and the rain surges that can creep up during the season. We've had such great weather here.

Why did you sever your pumpkin plant(s) and now you only have a STUMP?
