If you are forced to go with a pumpkin on a side vine is it best to try and set one on a vine close to the stump or one further out so as to have more plant behind the fruit?

Not sure but I would think that you would want it to be one of the ones further down the main vine so that it gets more of the plant behind it and perhaps closer to the main on the side vine so it is closer to the main for feeding (but wait for someone with more experience to confirm since that is just my guess based on growing field pumpkins.

Also just wanted to thank you again for the seeds this year - you've made my 10 year old niece very happy !! - we've got 2 pumpkins on your 851 that are doing very well so far - Here's a pic of the plant ( http://www.bigpumpkins.com/displayphoto.asp?pid=6668&gid=1 ) and one of the largest fruit last week though it's grown considerably this week also so is quite a bit larger now 193 OTT yesterday ( http://www.bigpumpkins.com/displayphoto.asp?pid=6667&gid=1 ) The plant is doing very well and you were right that it does hold up to the heat much better than some of the other plants.

i had to grow one on a side vine due to the plant aborting everything out of 20 attempts. my side vine was the only one that took so i had no choice. it was smaller than some of the other thicker secondaries. i would if by choice choose the thickest strongest vine inspected for no cracks and pollinate one anywhere on that strongest secondary on the plant. once the secondaries are terminated and all other females are removed but one, all the fruiting energy will go in the direction of the pumpkin no matter what. the biggest tubes to get the most flowing to the kin would be my suggestion. i still managed about a 800 pounder estimate that ended up having very thick walls and wish i had it weighed. all is not lost on secondary pumpkins for some respectable size fruit and you are still having a chance to make a good cross in the process and make someone very happy on halloween.

Hey Shazzy I talked to Mark this morning on the phone he was telling me he was going to train a secondary vine to take the place of the main...
I have never grown one in this situation so I'm guessing at best.my line of thinking was try and get one set on the secondary that Mark is training to take over as the main? not sure if that was good advice or not ..
thanks for your post.
I was going with get as much plant behind the pumpkin as possible .
