We live on the Cumberland River here in Kentucky and every year tons of sand is deposited on the banks. In this sand is small black specs which I believe to be pieces of coal. Since there are many coal mines in this area and up stream of our property. I wonder if I could use this sand as a base for my growing pumpkins. What effect would this 'coal' have on my patch? Thanks.

run it through a screen to get rocks and coal out. Good as any. most sand around here comes from the Ohio River. Its just washed and screened.
