milford, CT,

Just curious..If you set a fruit June 20th...is it and advantage or disadvantage if you plan on going to an October weigh off

I have pollinated around the 20th for the past 3 years, it hasnt hurt me, if you can keep the plant healthy, you can use it to your advantage having more days to put weight on the fruit.
An interesting topic that I heard talked about a few times with some of the best growers out there was the feeling that one of the ways to break into the next level would be to extend your growing season.

i could not agree more. if you get a good one on the hook early and she wants to go long then it can make the difference.

Mine have always stopped growing in early- mid September. But it was more from PM and lack of potassium than pollinating too early.

milford, CT,

Thanks everyone..I totally agree with the idea that you have to keep the plant healthy. I was also thinking..maximum sun days are June and July..and..the plant is at it's best productivity those months...why not try to take advantage of that. Mark

Last year my 2 early pollinations were my 2 biggest (1355 and 1293) One on 6/21 and one on 6/20....This year..I pollinated a 1596 Wallace on 6/17. If it was like the 1566 Rodonis and 904 Stelts...they continued to grow right up to the weighoff...the 1293 was the 2nd week in Oct also! So a lot of days on the vine!
I also use Banner Max systemic fungicide and it seems to keep the leaves healthy a long time...versus the old days when PM did take them down. I think most growers have switched to Clareys 3336, I think...I haven't switched...yet.
Good luck.

Where in Mingo county are you? My wife is a Hatfield from Blackberry Creek in Ky and has family in Chattaroy, and Goodman Hollow in Mingo County WV. We go back there 4 or 5 times a year.
