I'm wondering if anyone has any good idea on how to prevent/eliminate weeds from the patch. Was thinking about put a tarpdown and coverit for a few days till the stuff day. Any good weed tricks?

Rich, It took me a while to get brave enough to do this but I have used the Jerry Rose / Don Young method of weeding for the past few years, and thats use round up around my plants on a very calm day. I still dont use the round up as close as they do (right up against them pratically), but will use it up to 2 to 3 feet away from my plants. It has worked like a charm for me so far and has saved me alot of work to do other things. The closer weeds I will take the time to pull out by hand and try not to disturb the pumpkin roots at the same time.

Why would the pumpkin not absorb roundup and create a problem ?

Roundup has to be absorbed by the green growing vegetation to hurt a plant. When it hits the soil it is quickly attached to the clay particles and then broken down by bacteria. It is important to pull out any weeds that it doesn't kill so they don't go to seed and start up a roundup resistant weed problem. That is happening around the country on many farms.

Rich. Get yourself a push pull hoe. Buy it at loews. I don't use Round up or any of that stuff. I have a push pull hoe tht I use everyday for about 20 minutes everyday once the plant takes hold in that area I allow the weeds to grow doing minimal cultivating. When you do it the hard way it takes time and energy. Its worth it to me not having to worry about any accidents.

Round-up every couple weeks a couple feet from the plants on a calmer than calm day. If you're scared to use Round-up that close to the plants you can always use Horticultural Vinegar (EcoClear) or one of the Fatty Acid Products (TopGun by Safers) they will only burn off what you hit and won't translocate into the plant if you happen to hit a pumpkin leaf it will only burn that leaf.

Flame weeding sounds like a good idea but any slight wind can cause you to burn something you do not want to. I tried it last year I will not do it again.

I would love to have a flame thrower for weeding I've seen a video of it but can't recall the grower's name.

I cover my whole entire garden in straw/hay. Keeps moisture in/stops most weeds from coming up. The weeds that do come up is a tiny bit that you can just pull out in a few minutes. I dont ever have that bad of a battle with weeds, I have more of a battle with baby maple trees from me neighbors damn maple tree.

Thanks everyone, I missed this somehow. Been so darn busy round here latley. I'm thinking flame weeder cause it sounds like fun. Might just do the hoe thing and cover it with straw after. I have a cat that keeps mice miles away from here.
