I'm torn, you can check out my diary for pictures, but here is the situation.

991 urena blew out main vine at 2 feet. Cut it off, retrained a secondary coming out of stump for new main vine. It blows up 2 feet out as well. I mean blows up too! No fertilizing, no pruning, no extreme weather change, just nice warm weather. I have one last secondary coming out of main area that is 2 feet long and normal so far. My back up plant is the 1424 werner, started out real slow and tiny, finally growing more normal now and starting to size up a little. I need to pull one of them soon, very soon. They will grow into each other in a few days.

I am real scared of the 991 and not getting any kind of fruit with vines blowing up like pop corn kernals. But it is by far the better seed to grow. My gut tells me to go with the 1424, but I'm having a hard time yanking the 991. If the last vine blows up, then I won't need any advice! lol Any help? Thanks, Jim

I've read about an astounding number of 991s throwing ribbon/double vines and other mutations. I would trust my gut if I were you. I'm not a very experienced grower, of course, but there's no use struggling with a wayward plant that might not even reward you with something in return. And the 1424's genetics aren't anything anything to sneeze at, either. Just my opinion.

As great as 991 is, with that kind of fault twice, time to go with the backup.

Stick with the 991,,pulling it is like pulling a 998 or 1385,,dont do it! yet....991 is a stud, let her have a chance to grow a monster for you! She will straighten up for you!

I say keep at it! The season is full of suprise ... we just have to adapt and improvise! I went on vacation and came back to find the main died on my prised plant (think the son watered with hot water from the hose as all secondaries and leafs were damaged in that area -- else some virus?). Anyway, I'm now using two secondaries to grow as mains. That is all just the challange of growing AGs. So FIDO!

pumpkin jam, look at my diary picture, it shows what I am talking about. It starts as a small vertical split, and two hours later the vine has exploded 100% and the tip is laying on the ground, a very ugly scene! Thanks for all the opinions, any advice on how to stop the plant from blowing vines?

Duster Sounds like if that last secondary bursts you're going to have to pull it. Unfortunately, it's a hard call to determine why this is happening. Cell turgor may cause this to happen which, in turn is related to water uptake. Could the vine be getting overheated by the Sun? Could you cover the secondary and not water for a couple of days? And, a quick prayer wouldn't hurt at all.
