What does a borer look like? Are they on long Island?
What do you spray to kill them?

The very best thing to get in my opinion is Warrior Z. Its hard to get but not impossible if you have contacts. (its illegal w/o a license). I think warrior T was better but its been replaced by warrior Z. I would suggest a 2 front approach to the borers here on Long Island---first is water your plant with a MERIT product...imidocloprid is the active ingredient I believe...found in Admire 2, some Grubbex formulations, and some other products. Warrior Z is the contact defence- kills them when they land to lay eggs. The same chemical in warrior is available in other producs at lesser strengths and I understand its available at places like Home Depot under the name Bug be Gone or something like that. The active ingredient was lambda something beginning with a "C". People here will fill in these blanks I hope !! Email Tom Privitera at extreme pumpkin supplies or Steve Jepsen(tremer)...they can help you with advice and products.....

I ordered the trap today from extreme pumpkin. I will put it out in the garden as soon as it gets here. Tomorrow I will be at the local garden supply looking for an insecticide. I will be looking for merit, and lambda.

When is the best time to spray that stuff on? morning or night?

The answer here is more complicated than most would think. The goal is to spray at a time when the leaves will adequately dry before any strong sunshine hits them AND at a time when there are no bees visiting before its all dry. If you spray first thing in early morning there may not be adequate time to dry before the sun hits it and crispifies the leaves, plus the flowers for the day may have opened and the bees WILL visit and die. We want bees to live. If you spray in the evening on long island- depending on where you are- you may not dry enough by morning because of the overnight dew. A wet leaf surface will supposedly assist fungal spores in settling on leaves, but then again the dew does that anyway so its a crapshoot? I have party bees around here who seem to be doing thier thing all the way up until dark. And, even though they party til dark they still manage to be up at the crack of dawn to start the party all over again. So the object is to spray contact insecticide as needed but no more, have a backup systemic, and do as little damage as possible to the plant, environment, and bees/beneficials as possible. How you do that and what compromises you ultimately end up with is up to you. With that said, I spray in the late evening when nieghbors are inside, bees are minimal, flowers are withering and the next days flowers are unopened, and hope its all dry before a problem is created.
