One of my plants is in the process of starting to vine and "laying down". It's almost to the ground and after inspecting the plant I noticed 2 splits below the cots about 1" long. One of the splits is partially under the soil.
Should I be concerned about this or is it normal.
What can I do to help the plant heal itself?
Do I need to apply something to the damaged area?

IMHO I think you do not have to worry then. That is a very common problem unless it is the width you do not have to worry. I'm not sure of this but I think you can spray some fungicide in the split if you want to.

Spray the split with 6% Hydrogen Peroxide -- no stronger, then apply some fungicide (daconil or captan work well), keep it dry until it heals (a couple of days). I've heard some people build something like a table and set over it to keep the rain off. Don't cover it directly, it needs air.
