My seeds germinated on May 7, or slightly thereafter, and one in particular has been working on its first leaf since the 12th. I put them in the ground early this week, and three out of four are still mainly just cots. I /think/ this is pretty slow, and if so, are there any possible causes? Thanks and sorry for what may be a newbie-ish question.

Cool weather or cool night temps will make them slow growing.

It was rainy for a couple days there, but it's been warm otherwise... it was 88 today, for example.

I had one like that too, gave it a hit of nitrogen and it took off like a rocket. I had planted a back up because I had no faith that it would improve but it did and with gusto! Im a complete newbie so dont listen to me lol Im just stating my experience with a slow starter plant. They can catch up, Ive seen it.

The soil needs to be warm enough to promote microbial activity which allows for root development, without this root development there is nothing to feed the machine that pushs the above ground growth... thus our handle "Root-stalker".

Hey julian,
Mine also here in michigan have been slow growing (probably due to the biblical amount of rain we've been getting!) Try to keep your hoop houses on em at night if you got em(as I have) this will keep the heat trapped in better and I also have black plastic around them on the ground and this helps warm the soil also. HAVE FAITH my friend and you will be suprised as soon as summer ramps up!!

Now that it's been consistently warm for several days, the plants are finally starting to take off. Thanks for the responses everyone.

I'm in the Sacramento Valley and we have never had this cool weather in May. By this time we are in the 90's. Tomorrow should be in the 70's and Wed. 85.
