What is your target pollination date? I live in central Iowa?

The first warm, dry day of summer.
Current forecast for that day in Oregon is September 23rd.

I have to say that July 4th is the goal. you want to have a pollinated pumpkin at least 10 feet out on the main vine by July 4th.
Most growers will have a pollinated female on the main vine 12-16 feet out by july 4th, some will have 2 or 3 pollinated by then.
Start pollinating at 10 feet out on the main and keep pollinating every female that pops on the main, then you can make a your decision on what to keep after they get growing.

I made an attempt to answer the question last year, looking at data from AGGC web site. Here are links to the orginal posting and the follow up question. Reading each of them might give you a good refrence point. (Just remember that nothing is set in stone, and the data is far from a real statistical research, more like the trend versus a fact.)

jr, depends on when the weighoff you want to attend is. That combined w/the size of yer plant!!! Most suggestions I have read say pollinate keeper at minimum of 10 ft main vine length. Don prbly has a pkn pollinated already!!! LOL Good luck, and Grow em BIG!!! I hope to pollinate an early plant b/4 6/1...but that is an early plant for a mid August, State Fair!!! If I get any sunshine, I just might make it!!! Peace, Wayne
